You’re Not Doing Mindfulness Wrong—You’re Doing It Real: Deepak Shukla on Healing That Hurts (In a Good Way)

At KeepCalm, we’re drawn to people who say the quiet parts out loud—especially when it comes to wellness. That’s why we’re excited to feature Deepak Shukla, founder of Wellness in Italy, who has one rule for healing: stop trying to win at it.

Deepak doesn’t sell perfection. He sells presence. And sometimes, presence means sobbing in the middle of breathwork because you’ve spent 37 years breathing like the apocalypse was around the corner.

“Healing isn’t some clean, candlelit process,” he says. “It’s a full-contact, sweaty, awkward brawl with the parts of yourself you’ve ignored for decades.”

1. Mindfulness Doesn’t Make You Productive—It Makes You Honest

Deepak used to meditate just to get more done—until he realized how backwards that was.

“That’s like sleeping just to burn more calories.”

Now, he journals like a madman, meditates by staring at lakes, and skips entire days when he needs to just feel awful. And weirdly? That’s when the peace arrives.

Because real growth doesn’t come from doing mindfulness perfectly—it comes from not faking it.

2. Sit in the Discomfort—That’s Where It Gets Good

At Wellness in Italy, people are invited to show up messy. There are no gold stars for consecutive meditation days. No streaks to maintain. Just the raw, sometimes ugly process of facing yourself.

“If you can sit in your anxiety long enough to recognise its voice,” Deepak says, “you’ve already had more success than any self-help book will tell you.”

This isn’t about self-optimization. It’s about self-permission. To breathe badly. To feel deeply. To skip journaling and still be healing.

3. Growth Looks Like Chaos—and That’s Fine

You don’t need the Pinterest version of mindfulness to heal. You need truth. And sometimes, that truth is ugly handwriting, skipped routines, and lake-staring sessions where you forget you exist.

“That’s growth. That’s peace.”
