I ask for the help I need
I asked, and somebody said yes, and it was not the enormous thing I had built it into inside my head. I am going to do this earlier next time, because the waiting was the expensive part and the asking cost me almost nothing at all. Two weeks of carrying it. One minute of saying it. I would like those two weeks back, and I am not going to spend the next two the same way.
There is a message on my screen that says of course. Two words, sent inside a minute, after I spent a fortnight not sending mine. I keep looking at the timestamp on it. There was no hesitation in it anywhere, no weighing up, no sense at all that I had asked for something large or unusual.
I would rather struggle quietly than be a burden, and I have called that independence for years. It is closer to pride, and it has cost me time I am not getting back. The arithmetic never worked. I was protecting other people from a two minute favor by spending two weeks doing the thing badly on my own, and then calling the result self sufficiency. Nobody ever asked me to do that. I decided it on their behalf, I never checked with them, and if somebody I loved had done the same thing to me I would have been genuinely hurt by it. Refusing help does not make me strong. It makes me slow, and it quietly tells the people around me that I do not trust them with anything real.
People like being asked. Being useful to somebody you care about is not a cost, it is one of the better parts of a day, and I have been quietly denying that to people who love me while telling myself I was being considerate. Every time somebody asks me for something specific, I am pleased to have been the one they thought of. It genuinely never occurred to me that the same thing runs in the other direction, and that my silence was reading as distance rather than as strength. The strongest people I know ask for things constantly and directly, and I had the whole picture upside down.
So I name the one specific thing, to the one specific person. Not a general sense of struggling, which nobody can act on even when they very much want to. One thing, one person, out loud. Specific requests are easy to say yes to. Vague ones are just an atmosphere that other people have to stand around in, guessing at what would help.
Asked. Answered. I did not have to carry it alone, and it turns out that I never did.
