I begin again, and it counts

I am starting today, and I am going to finish this one. Not because I feel ready. I have waited on ready for most of my life and ready has never once turned up on its own. I am starting because I decided to, and a decision is something I make, not something I wait to be given. It is early and the room is quiet and nobody is watching, which is the only condition this has ever needed. The version of this that works begins in the next five minutes.

There is a cup beside me and the steam is going sideways in the light. My hands are warm around it. Outside, someone is walking a dog and neither of them is in any hurry. The building makes the small sounds it makes before anyone else is awake. Nothing about this morning looks like the beginning of anything. That is exactly what the beginning of something looks like, every time, for everyone who has ever done it.

I have started this before. Most people hear that and count it against themselves. It is not a strike against me, it is data that nobody else holds. Every attempt that stopped handed me something exact: the hour I am actually sharp in, the point in the week where I get tired, the excuse I reach for first and dress up as a reason. The reason starting over feels humiliating is that I am measuring myself against someone who never tried at all, and that person has learned precisely nothing. I am not behind them. I am ahead of them, carrying a map of ground they have never walked.

Here is the part I had backwards for years. I thought motivation was the fuel and the work was the engine, so I sat and waited to be filled up. It runs the other way. Motivation is what gets paid out after the work, not handed over before it. Waiting to feel like it is a plan that has never worked for anybody, and I have run that experiment enough times now to stop calling the result bad luck. The confidence I keep waiting on is manufactured on the far side of the first five minutes, never on this side of them. So the five minutes go first, and the feeling comes along behind, the way it always has.

So today I do the smallest version that exists. Five minutes. Done badly, if badly is what today has in it. Not the whole plan, not the impressive version I would describe to somebody at a party, just the piece that fits inside the life I actually have instead of the one I keep planning for. I put it somewhere I will see it tomorrow, because the second day is the one that decides this, and then I begin.

This is quieter than I expected. Not triumphant. Steady, which is the version that lasts. I get to start as many times as it takes, and the count was never the thing that mattered to anyone but me. Today is one of them. Today it counts. It always did, and I was the last to count it.
