You are in the middle, and the middle is the work

You are further into this than you were, and it does not feel like anything. That is worth naming at the start rather than treating as a problem. The kettle clicks off. There is a stack of days behind you with real work in them, even if none of those days announced itself. This morning is another one of those, and you are here for it.
A jacket over the back of a chair, holding the shape of somebody. Light on the floor in a long parallelogram. The fridge starting up and stopping again. Your notes from last week, still legible, still roughly correct, which is a quieter kind of evidence than it looks like.
The beginning had a story and the end will have one, and you are in the part between, where nothing is dramatic and nobody claps. This stretch is where most people stop. The reason is structural rather than personal. Anything worth building pays out almost nothing for a long stretch and then pays out all at once, which means the exact moment when quitting feels most reasonable is the moment just before the return arrives. Your instincts are not lying to you here so much as reading a graph that has not caught up to the work yet.
Notice which ruler you have been using. You have been checking for results, daily, and results are a terrible daily instrument because they move on a schedule you do not control. Effort moves on a schedule you do control entirely. Swap the measure and the whole stretch changes character: a day is no longer a referendum on whether this is working, it is simply a day where the rep either happened or it did not. That is a question you can answer honestly in four seconds, and it is the only question that has ever predicted anything.
So today you do the ordinary rep and you write down that you did it. No assessment. No checking whether it is paying off yet, because that check is the thing that has been costing you mornings. One mark on one page, and then the rest of the day is yours.
Nothing about today will look like progress from the inside. It never does, for anybody, which is precisely why so few people stay. You are staying. That is the entire difference, and it is available again tomorrow.
