You are what you keep doing

You have been waiting to feel like somebody who does this, and that feeling has not turned up. It has been a while now. The morning is ordinary and the room is quiet and the thing is still waiting where you left it. The order you have been expecting is backwards, and that is good news.

Shoes by the door, one slightly turned. A notebook with three pages used. Birds outside being extremely busy about nothing. The kettle finding its noisy middle and then settling.

You have been treating identity as a thing you arrive at and then act from. That is why the wait has been so long: an identity is not issued in advance, it is assembled out of evidence, and the only evidence that counts is what you actually did. So somebody who has never once written is not a writer waiting on confidence; they are a person with an empty file and a self-image that matches it exactly. That sounds harsh and it is the least harsh reading available, because it means the file is the entire problem and the file is something you can change this morning.

Run it the way it actually works. Every time you do the thing you cast one small vote for being somebody who does it, and the belief is downstream of that tally rather than upstream of it. That is why one session changes almost nothing and forty change who you think you are. You are not missing a quality that other people were born with. You are missing a run of days, and days are the one resource nobody has to grant you.

So today you do one thing that person would obviously do, without hesitating over it. Small, unremarkable, and squarely on the record where it counts. Not to make progress on the goal but to add one line to the file, because the file is what you have been waiting on this whole time.

You will not feel it until you have been behaving that way for a good while first. Start the tally today and let the feeling catch up in its own time.
