I finish the thing I keep restarting

I am past the part where I always stop. Tonight I went further with this than I have ever gone, and it was not dramatic in the slightest. There was no breakthrough. There was a chair and fifteen pages. I am going to leave the marker where it is and do exactly the same thing tomorrow, which is the only mechanism that has ever actually worked for me on anything. Fifteen pages is not impressive. Fifteen pages I will never have to read again is a different thing entirely.

The marker has moved. There is a small stack of read behind it now, and the unread part looks considerably less like a wall than it did a week ago. The spine has started to give in the right place. It is beginning to look like a book somebody owns rather than a book somebody bought.

I have started this four times. Every restart cost me the ground I had already covered, and I called that being thorough, which was generous of me. What it actually was, was a refusal to accept a partial position. I wanted to be somebody who had read it properly rather than somebody who was in the middle of reading it. That preference has now cost me four books worth of pages while leaving me holding none of them. Perfectionism does not produce better work here. It produces no work at all, very slowly, while feeling like rigor.

Progress does not need momentum, it needs a marker. Fifteen pages that I keep are worth more than fifty I will read again next spring, because keeping is where all of the compounding lives. Going back to the beginning felt like rigor and functioned as a reset. Anything that resets my position is not a strategy, it is a very well disguised way of standing still while feeling extremely busy. I would far rather be genuinely halfway through something than repeatedly at the start of it.

So tonight, fifteen pages, and I leave the marker exactly where I stop. Tomorrow starts there, not at the beginning and not at the last chapter I feel confident about. No rereading for the sake of feeling caught up, because feeling caught up is not the goal and never was. Forward only, from wherever I actually am rather than from wherever I would prefer to be.

Further along than yesterday. That is all finishing has ever been.
