You get up, and the count does not matter

Something did not work, and you are still here, and both of those are facts of equal weight this morning. The kitchen is doing its ordinary business. There is bread or there is not. What matters is that the day arrived on schedule, indifferent and available, the way it does after every single one of these.

Cold tap running until it runs properly cold. A crack in a tile you have looked at a thousand times. Somebody's car starting badly in the street and then starting. The clock on the oven, wrong by nine minutes, as always.

The part that stings is not the setback. It is the story you attached to it on the way down, the one where this is a pattern and the pattern is you. That story is doing real damage because it converts a single event into a permanent trait, and a trait cannot be worked on while an event obviously can. What actually happened is smaller and more useful than the story: a specific attempt met a specific obstacle under specific conditions, most of which you can name and some of which you can change.

Consider who ends up with the better record here. Somebody who has stopped four times has four detailed accounts of exactly where the ground gives way, and a person who never attempted it has none. You have been treating those stops as marks against you when they are the only reconnaissance anybody in your position could possibly have gathered. The scar tissue is not damage, it is a map, and it is drawn in a level of detail that no amount of planning from a safe distance could ever produce.

So the restart happens today, at half the size it was before. Half the duration, half the target, half the ambition, because the version that broke was calibrated for a week that is not this week. Small enough to survive a bad day is the only specification that matters right now.

Nobody is counting but you, and you have been counting the wrong number. The one that matters is how quickly you are back, and today the answer is today. That is a good answer. It always was.
