Intention

You give it your whole self or you let it go

There is something you are half doing and have been for a while. Not failing at it. Not finishing it either. The morning is clear and the thing is still there, in the same condition it has been in for months, waiting for a decision that never quite gets made.

A folder you open and close. A calendar with something recurring on it. The particular thickness of morning air before a window is opened. Steam going sideways off a cup in the light.

Hedging feels like keeping your options open and it functions as paying for two things and receiving neither. The reason is straightforward: half effort produces results too weak to be encouraging, and weak results are read as evidence that the thing was not for you, so the hedge quietly manufactures the proof it was protecting you against. Meanwhile the hours are spent at full rate. You are not undecided about this. You are decided and unwilling to say so, and those look identical from outside and nothing alike from in here.

Consider what a clean ending would give you. Not failure, which is what the hedge is avoiding, but the hours back, and the attention back, and one fewer open loop levying its small tax on everything else. And if the honest answer is that you do want it, then half is the one approach guaranteed not to get you there, so the hedge is not the safe option, it is the only option with a certain outcome. Either direction beats the middle. The middle is the only place that cannot pay.

So today it goes one way. Either it gets a real slot in the week, written down, defended like something that matters, or it ends cleanly and kindly and you tell whoever needs telling. One sentence either way, said today, to yourself at minimum and out loud if anybody else is involved.

Both answers are good ones and either would be a relief. Only the middle was costing you, and it has been doing that quietly for long enough now. Choose, and take the week back.
