I make something with my hands

My hands are busy and my head has gone quiet in a way it has not managed all week. I am going to do this on purpose from now on, rather than stumbling into it once a season and being surprised by how well it works. It is not a mood that arrived. It is a thing I did, and things I do can be repeated. Twenty minutes with my hands did what an entire week of trying to think my way calm could not.

There is something under my fingers with actual texture to it. A little mess on the table. Nothing here needs a password, nothing here has a notification, and nothing here is going to update itself overnight into a slightly worse version of itself. My hands know what they are doing slightly before I do.

Everything I make lately is made of pixels and disappears when the screen goes off. I did not notice that mattering until it did, and then it mattered a great deal and all at once. There is a difference between work that leaves a trace and work that only leaves a record, and I have been living almost entirely on the second kind. A whole day of it can feel like nothing happened, even when a great deal did, because there is nothing standing in the room afterward to prove it. I have been ending days unable to point at anything.

Making something physical uses a part of me that nothing else reaches. It does not have to be good. It has to be real and in my hands. The reason this works is not mystical in the slightest. My attention is finally given somewhere to go that is neither a screen nor my own thoughts, and it turns out that a large share of what I have been calling stress is simply attention with nowhere useful to land. Give it a job and it stops circling.

So I give twenty minutes to something physical, with no screen anywhere near it. Whatever is at hand counts. Bread, a plant, a broken thing, a pencil, a wall that needs painting. The standard is not quality and it is not usefulness. The standard is that it exists in the room when I am finished with it.

Something exists that did not this morning, and I made it. That is a good thing to end a day on.
