I look at the number I have avoided
I know the number now. I looked at it, wrote it down, and the room did not fall in. I am going to look again next week, and the week after that. The looking was never the hard part. The not looking was, and it quietly charged me for the privilege every single night for months without ever sending an itemized bill. The number was fixed the entire time. Only my willingness to look at it was moving.
It is on a piece of paper in my own handwriting. A number is very much smaller written down than it is at three in the morning. It sits there being finite, which is the single most useful property it has. I have not done anything about it yet and I do not need to have.
I had been guessing for months, and the guess was always worse than the truth, because a guess has no edges and can grow all night without anything ever contradicting it. An unexamined number is not a number, it is a mood, and moods scale with how tired I happen to be at the time. The avoidance felt like self protection. It was the exact opposite of that. I was defending myself against a fixed quantity by replacing it with an unbounded one, and then living inside the unbounded one full time. That is a bad trade, and I made it every day for the better part of a year.
You cannot make a plan about a feeling. You can make one about a number. Knowing it is the entire difference between worry and arithmetic, and arithmetic is something I can actually act on during an ordinary Tuesday afternoon. Nothing about my situation changed in the moment I looked. Everything about my ability to do something with it did, and those two are not the same thing at all. That is precisely why looking is worth doing even when the news is not good, and it is worth the most exactly then.
So I open the account, I look once, and I write the figure down. Looking is the whole task. Deciding anything at all can wait until tomorrow, and I am explicitly not allowed to build a plan tonight, because that rule is the only thing that makes the looking survivable in the first place. One task, clearly bounded, finished inside ninety seconds.
Known. Not solved, but known, and known is where solving starts.
