Intention

You stay in it slightly past comfortable

You are going to reach a point today where stopping feels entirely reasonable. It will arrive with good arguments and a calm tone. This morning, before any of that, is a fine time to decide what happens next. The day is open. You have done this before and you know roughly where the point is.

Shoes by the door, one slightly turned. A glass of water going lukewarm on a shelf. The hum of a building that is fully awake now. Your own breathing, which you notice for a second and then stop noticing.

The moment you usually stop is not the moment you run out. It arrives well before that, and it arrives on schedule, and it always sounds like sense rather than reluctance. What is actually happening is that discomfort has crossed a threshold your body prefers to avoid, and it produces a very persuasive case for stopping which has nothing to do with capacity. You have been treating that voice as a fuel gauge when it is closer to a thermostat, and thermostats can be set.

The interesting part is where the change happens. Everything up to your usual stopping point is maintenance, the work that keeps you roughly where you already are, and it is only the portion just past it that asks for anything new. Which means the entire adaptation lives in the last few minutes, the ones you have been reliably skipping, and the hour before them has mostly been paying rent. A longer session is not the answer. A slightly later finish is, and that is a far smaller ask than it has been feeling like.

So today you go five minutes past. Not to exhaustion, not to prove anything, and not every day from now on. Five minutes beyond the moment the reasonable voice starts up, on this one occasion, and then you stop properly and go and do something else.

Five minutes is nothing and it is exactly the part that counts. You will finish knowing something specific about where your edge actually sits, which is more than the last month of sessions told you. Go slightly past. Then rest well.
