I ask the question I am scared of
I asked it. The question I have been circling for three weeks is out in the room and the room is entirely fine. Nothing broke. The circling was the expensive part, the asking took about nine seconds, and I have been making that exchange for years while calling it caution. The next one goes faster.
A pause on the other side of it. Not the bad kind. The kind where a person is genuinely thinking instead of assembling a reply. Somewhere behind them a chair shifts. My jaw has come unlocked, and I had no idea it was locked.
Not asking felt safer. It was not safer, it was quieter, and I paid for the quiet in weeks of guessing at something I could have had for free in a sentence. The version I built in the absence of an answer was more detailed and more confident than anything that proved to be true, and considerably worse, because that is what a mind does with a gap. It does not leave it empty. It fills it badly and then treats the filling as evidence. What it puts there is in my own handwriting, which is precisely why it never occurs to me to question the source.
Any real answer is worth more than the story I assemble without one. Even the reply I did not want hands me something solid, and standing on unwelcome ground is still better than standing on ground I invented last Tuesday. Certainty was never the goal. Information was. I had been avoiding one bad sentence by living inside a worse imaginary one, on a loop, at no charge, for a fortnight.
So I write it down, plainly, and I ask it in the next conversation I have. Written first, because in the moment I will soften it into something nobody can answer and then be quietly disappointed by what comes back to the softened version. The written one is the real one. That is what gets asked, in those words, without the long preamble I would otherwise build to make it easier on myself.
Asked, answered, and the guessing is finished. I traded a stack of invented replies for one true one, and the true one was smaller than everything I made up. I am not buying that silence again.
