I put the phone in another room
The phone is in another room and I am here, in this one, for the first time all evening. I am going to do this every night this week. The room got bigger the moment it left, which is a strange thing to report about a room that has not changed size at all. Nothing was gained. Something stopped being subtracted.
My hand keeps going to my pocket and finding nothing there. It is happening less often than it was an hour ago. There is a conversation going on that has not been interrupted once, and I had genuinely forgotten what that shape sounds like from the inside. Sentences are getting all the way to the end of themselves. Nobody here is waiting for me to finish looking at something else before they can continue.
I have been in rooms all week without actually being in them. The people in those rooms noticed, even if nobody said anything about it, because that is not the sort of thing people say out loud. I told myself I was being efficient. What I was doing was taking small withdrawals from every good moment and spending them on nothing in particular. None of those withdrawals felt like a decision at the time, which is precisely what allowed them to add up to an entire week I cannot really account for.
Distance is the only thing that works. Willpower loses to a device engineered by thousands of extremely capable people specifically to beat it, and losing that fight is not a character flaw, it is the expected result of a badly matched contest. So I stopped trying to win it and changed the terms instead. Environment beats intention every single time. The genuinely good news buried in that is I do not have to become a more disciplined person. I have to walk down the hall.
So it goes in another room, and I set it down before I sit down, because afterwards is a decision I already know that I will not make. The order is the entire trick. Once I am seated and comfortable, the phone is nearer than the hallway is, and at that point the evening is already decided.
Present. Actually present. The evening got longer.
