I take back one quiet hour
There is an hour today that belongs to me. Not the leftover minutes at the end of everything else, an actual hour, chosen on purpose and then defended. Nobody gave me this hour. I took it, and the taking is the part that had to change. I am going to take one of these every week for the rest of my life, and I am going to stop describing it as an indulgence when somebody asks what I am doing with it.
The door is closed. My phone is in another room being somebody else's problem for a while. There is a cup going cold beside me because I forgot about it entirely, which is its own kind of proof that something real was happening in here. I have not spoken to anybody for fifty minutes and it has not cost a single person anything.
I gave this hour away for years without noticing. It went in small pieces to people who had not asked for it and would not have missed it, and that is the part that stings the most. Nobody took it from me. I handed it over, one yes at a time, because each individual yes was too small to be worth defending, and no single one of them ever looked like the moment to draw a line. The small requests are the dangerous ones. An hour gets refused. Ten minutes gets granted six times a day. That is how a life gets spent without anybody ever deciding to spend it.
An hour is not selfish. It is the thing that makes me useful for the other twenty three. Everyone I care about gets a better version of me on the far side of it, which means protecting it is not something I do instead of showing up for them. It is the thing that lets me show up at all. This is not time taken away from the people who matter. It is the maintenance that makes me worth their time. The people who lose least from this hour are the ones I love most, and I had that backwards for a decade.
So I block one hour this week, in the calendar, with a name on it. The name matters, because an unnamed block gets moved and a named one gets respected, including by me. Then I tell one person that it is taken, because saying it out loud is what turns an intention into a fact that other people have to route around. An hour nobody knows about is an hour that gets quietly reassigned by Wednesday afternoon.
One hour that is mine. I did not have to earn it, and I do not have to justify it to anybody, including myself, and I was the last one to be convinced.
