I build something that is mine

Somebody I have never met is using the thing I made. Not as a favor, not because I asked. They found it, it did what they needed, and that is the whole transaction. Something I built went out and worked without me standing beside it explaining what it was for. The only sensible response is to go and make the next one.

A short message on the screen from a stranger. Four lines, no flourish, better than flourish, since there was no reason on earth to be generous about it. I have read it more times than I will admit to. A cursor blinks in an empty file underneath.

For a long stretch I made things in private and told nobody, and I called that having standards. It was closer to having a good hiding place. While the work stayed unseen it could not be judged, and work that cannot be judged also cannot improve, so I was trading the entire upside for the comfort of never being visibly wrong. That felt like modesty from the inside. From outside it kept everything small, and small was the price I paid without ever seeing the invoice.

Saying it out loud is not bragging. It is letting the thing exist somewhere other than behind my eyes, where reality can reach it and correct it. Every piece of work I have finished got better the moment another person could see it, and not one improved during the months I spent quietly polishing in the dark. Feedback is not the fee charged for finishing. It is the only thing that makes the next one better than this one.

So today I tell one person what I am making. Out loud, in plain words, with no apology in front of it and no shrinking it first so nobody can accuse me of taking it seriously. One person is the requirement. The count is not the point. Moving it from somewhere perfectly safe and completely useless to somewhere a human being can respond to it is the point.

Mine, real, and reachable by other people. None of those three needed it to be big first, and holding out for big is precisely how a thing stays none of them. Small and real beats large and imaginary.
