I get outside before the day starts
I am outside and the day has not started asking me for anything yet. The air is doing what early air does. I got here before it did, and that is the entire thing I set out to accomplish this morning. It is a low bar and it changes everything that comes after it. Ten minutes ago I was horizontal and unconvinced. That gap between unconvinced and outside is the only part that ever needed managing. The order of the day is one of the few parts of it that is genuinely mine to set.
There is nobody about except one person walking a dog, and neither of them is in any hurry. My shoes are already a little wet. The light is the flat unhurried kind that happens for about twenty minutes and then does not happen again for the rest of the day. Somewhere a long way off a van is reversing. I have not looked at a screen yet and it is showing.
Most mornings I go straight from the bed to the screen, and the day has me before I have myself. I know precisely what that costs and I have done it anyway, hundreds of times, which is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. The first input I take sets the shape of everything after it, and I had been handing that decision to whatever arrived overnight from people who do not know me and are not thinking about me. That is not a small thing to give away. I gave it away by default rather than by choice, which is how most things get given away. I would never let a stranger set the tone of my whole day, and then I let a screenful of them do exactly that every morning.
Ten minutes outside first changes the entire shape of the day, and not because it fixes anything. It works because I got to it before it got to me. The order matters more than the amount. A day I begin on my own terms and a day I begin on somebody else's contain exactly the same hours and feel like two completely different lives, and the difference between them is decided inside the first ten minutes. That is an absurdly good return on ten minutes, and it is available tomorrow.
So tonight the shoes go by the door. Tomorrow, ten minutes, before the phone. That is the entire plan and it fits inside any morning I am realistically going to have, including the bad ones. I am removing the decision the night before, because the version of me at six in the morning should never have been asked to make it. Willpower is a poor plan. Shoes by the door is a good one. The decision gets made tonight, while I am still the one making it.
The day can have me now. I got there first, and I intend to keep getting there first.
