You would never say that to a friend

You made a mistake and you have been talking to yourself about it in a voice you would never use out loud. It started before you were properly awake. The room is quiet and reasonable and the voice is neither. There is a whole day here, and the first decision in it is which voice gets to narrate.
Cold water running until it runs properly cold. A crack in a tile you have looked at a thousand times. The fridge starting up and stopping. Your own hands, doing the ordinary thing, while the commentary continues.
If a friend brought you this exact mistake you would know what to say inside a second. You would be warm and you would be useful and you would be honest about the part that was theirs. You do not extend yourself the same deal, and the reason is not that you hold a higher standard: it is that contempt feels like accountability from the inside, so being hard on yourself reads as taking it seriously. It does not work that way. A person braced against their own voice spends the energy on bracing, which means the harshness costs you the very thing it was supposed to buy.
Look at what the cruelty is protecting. If you get there first and hardest, nobody can hurt you with it afterward, and that is a real strategy, just an expensive one. It is not rigor wearing a hard face, it is fear of somebody else saying it. Meanwhile the people who actually improve fastest are almost never the ones talking to themselves like that; they are the ones who can look at a mistake squarely without flinching, which is far easier when looking does not come with a punishment attached.
So today you say it back in the other voice. Same facts, nothing softened, nothing excused, but in the words you would use for somebody you like. Out loud if you can, once. It will feel unearned and slightly ridiculous, and it is neither.
You are allowed to be on your own side while telling yourself the truth. Those were never opposites. They only looked that way from inside the other voice.
