About
KEEP CALM INC
KEEP CALM is a technology nonprofit. We build and run a free mental health library in 36 languages: 500 articles, verified crisis helplines for 51 countries, free posters, songs and games. No advertising, no paywall, no account required to read any of it. KEEP CALM INC is a United States 501(c)(3) public charity, EIN 33‑2117386, and publishing that library is our charitable purpose.
Our mission
KEEP CALM INC exists to put the practical tools of a steadier life within reach of everyone, free of charge and in their own language.
What we do. We publish and give away a mental health library: 500 plain-language, evidence-informed articles on stress, sleep, focus, money and work, relationships, hard days and calm leadership, in 36 languages across more than 19,000 pages. Alongside it we publish verified crisis helpline directories for 51 countries, free unlimited posters at print quality, and free songs, games and guided Intentions. There is no advertising, no paywall, and no account needed to read, print or share any of it.
Who we serve. Anybody having an ordinary hard day who will never see a clinic, because of what care costs, how far away it is, or which language it is offered in. Our first priority is readers in the languages commercial mental health products skip entirely, and diaspora readers who want help in the language they think in rather than the one they work in.
What we are not. Nothing here is medical care. This is free educational self-help, and every page that touches a hard subject points toward real, human help.

The problem we exist for
Sources, in order: WHO, Mental disorders (2021 figures) · WHO, same fact sheet · W3Techs content language survey, read 2 September 2026.
Most people who are struggling never reach formal care, because of what it costs, how far away it is, or which language it is offered in. And the free help that does exist online is overwhelmingly English. A translate button does not close that gap: it hands a Twi or Wolof reader machine text that quietly reverts to English on the sentence that mattered.
Who runs it
Two co-founders and nobody on payroll, running the organization on a fixed platform bill of about $136 a month.
Co-Founder and President
Kaʻohele Carlos
Kaʻohele on LinkedInFrom the North Shore of Oʻahu · Lives in San Francisco
Kaʻohele has spent his career leading design teams at the intersection of technology, design and entertainment, most of it inside businesses running at full speed with a great deal on the line. What he took from it is the thing this organization is named for. The people who do their best work under real pressure are not the loudest ones in the room. They are the ones who stay steady, think clearly, and treat the people around them well while doing it. Calm is not the opposite of ambition; it is what makes ambition possible. It is what he builds into the teams he leads, and the first thing he passes on to the leaders coming up behind him. KEEP CALM is his opportunity to hand that same steadiness to everybody else, free, and in their own language.
Kaʻohele’s background
He grew up in Hawaiʻi and lived in Los Angeles from graduation until about a year ago. Most of his career has been spent at the intersection of technology, design, and entertainment. He was part of the small team that built Fandango in Los Angeles, and the company was eventually sold to Comcast. He went on to CBS, where he led Design and helped transform the traditional TV company into a global interactive business by building Paramount+ from the ground up. He later led Design at Amazon Prime Video, and today he is Chief Design Officer at ID.me, where he leads design across the business and is helping steer the company toward an IPO and on into its future.

Hawa Naataa
Hawa on LinkedInFrom Ghana · Lives in Pittsburgh
Hawa moved from Ghana to the United States at the age of twelve, and that journey gave her a rare blend of African and Western perspectives. Growing up as the eldest daughter in an African household, she navigated her own hard seasons; her turning point came through embracing mental-health resources and a deep practice of self-compassion. With a background spanning cybersecurity and cultural storytelling, she brings that gift to KEEP CALM, and a determination to make mental wellness something we talk about openly, across every culture.
What we publish, and give away
- The library. 500 plain-language, evidence-informed articles on stress, sleep, focus, money and work, relationships, hard days, and leading yourself and other people well. Published in 36 languages across more than 19,000 pages.
- Crisis directories. Verified support services listed by country, 51 countries so far, resolved to the reader’s own country and language.
- Posters. Free and unlimited, at print quality, in every language we publish. Nothing to buy and no allowance to spend.
- Songs, games and Intentions. Free to play and free to listen to, with no signup and no ads.
What this is not, and the guardrails around it
A free mental health library that anyone can reach at 2 a.m. has to be clear about its own edges, so here are ours.
- This is not therapy, treatment or diagnosis. It is free educational self-help. That sentence is on every page of this site, not just this one.
- No clinician has reviewed this library. Articles are grounded in published research from NIMH, NIH, the NHS, the CDC, the APA and peer-reviewed journals, and each one names its sources. That is not the same as clinical review, and we do not describe it as though it were.
- Crisis routing is never gated. The crisis ribbon, the Get Help Now page and every helpline link are free of any account, any payment and any consent wall, in every language, forever. We publish verified helplines for 51 countries, and a number we cannot confirm never goes on the page at all, however much we would rather have the coverage than the gap.
- What the AI does, and what it does not. AI translates the library against a written per-language style standard, writes lyrics for member songs, and runs a moderation wall in 36 languages over everything a reader creates. We also build optional conversational features, a Calm Companion and Calm Coaches, which offer general supportive conversation and are not counseling, not therapy and not a crisis service. No AI here diagnoses, treats or advises anyone in a crisis, no reader is ever led to believe they are talking to a person, and every conversational surface routes to a verified human helpline rather than trying to handle it.
- The failure mode is refusal. A translation that comes back identical to its English source is rejected at build time. So is one that drops a crisis number. Ambiguous poster wording fails closed rather than open. We would rather publish less than publish something unsafe.
- We collect nothing that identifies you. Anonymous daily tallies, no names, no browsing profile, no precise location, no advertising and no third-party trackers. There is nothing here to sell and we have never sold it.
How it is paid for, and why the shop is not the point
Nothing we sell unlocks a single page of help, and there is nobody for a surplus to go to. KEEP CALM INC has no owners and no shareholders, so everything left after costs stays in the organization and pays for the free library.
Three sources, all in service of that one thing. Donations. An optional membership, where everything free stays free and members get to make custom songs. And a shop where KEEP CALM INC is itself the merchant of record, selling mission-related goods.
The free library is not a lead magnet for any of it. It is the charitable purpose, and it is protected in writing by the Free Help Guarantee: nothing that is free today will ever move behind a payment. We also publish what the things we give away cost us to make, down to the cent, a song at $0.477, a poster at $0.187 and a card video at $0.85, alongside where the organization’s money came from and where it went. See the financial statements.

Principal officer. Kaʻohele Carlos, President and Co-Founder. He signs the filings and is accountable for what is published here.
Leadership team. Kaʻohele Carlos, President and Co-Founder, sets product direction and builds the platform. Hawa Naataa, Co-Founder and Treasurer, works on how this is written and talked about across cultures and holds the treasurer’s responsibility for the organization’s money.
Board. KEEP CALM INC is governed by a board of directors, as a California nonprofit public benefit corporation must be. The directors are Kaʻohele Carlos, President, Hawa Naataa, Treasurer, Alfred Carnes and Rudy Gallegos.
Staff. At the close of the last reported fiscal year, 31 December 2025, the organization had nobody on payroll. It is run by its two co-founders.
Where to reach us. KEEP CALM INC, Danville, California, United States. Write to Contact@KeepCalm.org or text +1 310.940.7676 and a person answers, not a form.
Filings. The 2025 Form 990-N was filed and accepted by the IRS. In California, our FTB 3500A application for state tax exemption has been mailed to the Franchise Tax Board; charity registration with the Attorney General and the 2024 Form 990-N are the two filings still ahead of us. We would rather you read that here than find it in a registry.
What we do not claim
A funder probably learns more from this paragraph than from the rest of the page. KEEP CALM has no outcome study, no pre-and-post measure and no evaluation partner. “Evidence-informed” means our articles are grounded in published research; it does not mean we have measured our own effect on anybody. We collect nothing that identifies a reader, which is deliberate and also means we do not quote audience figures we could not defend. The organization is under two years old, is run by its two co-founders, and has a four-member board named on this page. The federal determination and the 2025 Form 990-N are done, the FTB 3500A has been mailed, and California charity registration and the 2024 Form 990-N are the filings still ahead of us. Our first real outcome measure is the work we are currently raising for.
