Da First Ten People You Gotta Tell About Your New Thing

Write down ten people who already know what you can do, den message dem one at a time with one offer and da price in da first line. Ten short messages usually beat one big launch: somebody who trust you no gotta figure out first if you real.

Da listing stay live, da shelf stay stocked, da file export with no error, and now you staring at one share button with no idea where fo point um. Dat's one good spot fo be in. You wen make something, which most people neva do, and da next move stay smaller and more ordinary than da one you bracing for.

Your first customer almost always stay somebody who already know you. Not one ad, not one algorithm, not one crowd you gotta build first. One person who get some idea what you can do and who actually read one message from you instead of deleting um. So da job this week stay fo write down ten of dose people, decide what you offering each one, and send ten separate messages with one price in da first line. Take one evening, and it work way more often than da launch you wen plan instead.

Who I should tell first about something I just wen make?

Tell da ten people who already know what you can do, one at a time, before you tell anybody else. One stranger gotta decide if you real before dey decide if dey like da thing, and da people on your list already wen skip dat step.

One big announcement feel like da bigger move cuz everybody can see um. You post one time, four people react, da evening pau and nothing wen happen. One single message feel smaller but it not. It land somewhere da person actually read, it say dea name, and it ask one question dat get one answer.

Worth knowing how big this thing stay. Da Office of Advocacy count 36.2 million small businesses in da United States, and 82.3 percent of dem no more employees at all. Almost everybody you going ever compete with stay one person too, deciding who fo message tonight. Nobody in dat group stay winning on advertising budget. Dey winning cuz somebody already trust dem, and trust stay da one thing you get more of than one company with one media plan.

So da list not what you settle for cuz you no more audience. It stay da first channel, and it keep working long after you get da odda ones.

Where da ten names come from?

Pull from four groups, and take da names dat come first instead of da best ones. People who wen buy something like this before, people who wen ask what you working on, people who do work next to yours, and people who owe you nothing and just like you.

  • People who already wen pay for something similar. Dey wen prove dey going spend money in this category, which stay da hardest thing fo prove about anybody.
  • People who wen ask what you working on. Dey wen open da door demself. You just answering one question instead of starting one conversation.
  • People who do work next to yours. Da framer by da printer, da accountant with ten clients like you, da photographer whose customers keep asking for da thing you make. Dese people rarely buy. Dey refer, and one of dem worth several customers.
  • People who owe you nothing and like you. Old coworkers, da person from da night class, da friend of one friend you talk to twice one year.

Dat last group look like da weakest one and plenty times it not. In one study of more than twenty million people on LinkedIn, published in Science, da connections one person interact with da least stay da ones dat most often wen lead to one new job. Dat research stay about jobs not sales, so hold um loose, but da mechanism stay da same in both: da people slightly outside your daily circle stay standing in rooms you neva enter.

Now add one second column next to da names. Not what you like from each person. What you can say about dem dat stay true and specific.

Why any of dese ten people going answer me?

Dey answer cuz of what you wen do before you needed anything, and cuz your message name something real about dem. One note carrying one accurate sentence about dea work and one clear offer stay one different animal than one note dat only ask.

Specific stay da whole word. "Love your work" land in everybody's inbox and stay with nobody. "Da way you wen lay out da second page of dat menu stay da reason I wen keep um" is one sentence somebody going remember for one year. Cost you one minute and plenty times it stay da most valuable thing in da message, including da offer.

If you neva do none of dat, you not late and you no gotta wait. You just do um in one slightly different order. This week, send five of da ten something genuinely useful with no ask attached at all. One supplier cheaper than da one dey using. Da name of somebody hiring. Da fix for da broken thing you wen notice on dea site. Say nothing about your own work. Next week, send da offer.

No need call this anything. It stay da cheapest move in this article and it stay da reason da list work at all.

What I actually say without sounding weird?

Four sentences. What you wen make, why you telling this person in particular, da offer with da price in um, and one question dat can get one yes or one no.

Here da shape, from somebody who make leather bags.

  1. What um is. "I finally wen finish da work bag I been making. Take one fifteen inch laptop and it stay one piece of vegetable tanned leather."
  2. Why dem. "You carry dat satchel everywhere and you da person I trust on this."
  3. Da offer and da price. "It stay 180 dollars, I get four of dem, and I can get one to you by Friday."
  4. Da question. "You like one, or you know somebody who would?"

Put da price in da first message. One message with no price force da odda person fo do da awkward part, and most people avoid awkward by just not replying. Naming da number yourself stay one courtesy, and it mean whoeva answer stay answering da real question.

Send dem one at a time. One group message tell ten people dey stay on one list, which stay exactly da thing you was worried about sounding like.

What one no actually worth?

One no close one loop tonight dat otherwise going stay open for one month, and usually it come with one reason attached. Dat reason stay da cheapest research you going ever buy, cuz it come from somebody who like you enough fo be honest with you.

Read da reasons instead of counting dem. "Too expensive for me right now" and "I already get one" and "I no really carry one laptop" stay three completely different pieces of information, and only one of dem stay about your price. Ten messages dat give you eight noes with reasons wen tell you more than one hundred views on one post eva going.

One no from somebody who know you rarely stay da end of um too. People forward stuff, which stay why da last line of da template ask if dey know somebody else, and cost you nothing fo leave dat door open.

Da second round, two weeks later

Put one date two weeks out on your calendar now and write round two on um. Den send one short second message to da people who neva reply, which going be most of dem, and it not personal. Grown people miss messages. One follow up dat add something new, one photograph, one finished piece, da fact dat two stay gone, is not pestering. Dat's da ordinary way things get sold, and da person who neva send um just get less answers.

Den write da next ten names. Da list not one launch you survive one time. It stay one habit, and da people who get round three already wen see round one and dey remember um.

None of this asking you fo want less or move slower. It asking you fo spend da first week of your energy on ten real people instead of on one crowd dat no exist yet, cuz dat's where da first yes come from, and da first yes stay what buy you da nerve fo go get da next fifty.
