Two years in, you know stuffs about your trade dat you neva could read nowhere. You know which supplier going answer on one Friday. You know what one good week look like, and you wen get couple already. This stay da part where one business get real interesting, and this stay da part too where one question start running quiet in da background: how long I going keep going.
Da answer not fo stop asking. Da answer is fo answer um one time, in writing, while you stay calm, and den quit paying rent on um every month. Dat written answer stay one stop line: one number, one date, and one limit you no going pass. It's da least dramatic document you going ever make. It let you push full effort, cuz da ting dat going tell you fo stop wen get decided already, and it's not your mood on one Tuesday.
What one stop line stay, exactly?
Three things written down way befo time: one number dat going mean stop, one date when you look at dat number, and one limit you no going cross just fo keep going. Dat's da whole ting, and it fit on one line of paper.
Here's one example dat stay boring on purpose. If da shop no cover its own costs six months straight by June next year, I close da storefront and keep um as one market stall. I no going put more than 2,000 dollars of my own money in. I look at dis on da first of June.
Da number come from your own accounts, not from one feeling. Revenue, profit, orders one month, hours worked against money going out, whichever one really describe your business. Pick one. Two numbers stay one negotiation with yourself, and you going win um whichever way you happen fo feel dat day.
Da date is what turn da number into one decision instead of one threat. It say: I not judging dis in March, I judging um in June. Everything between now and den stay work, not evidence.
Da limit is da part people leave out, and it's da part dat protect da rest of your life. Money you no going spend. Debt you no going take on. One relationship or one job you no going sacrifice just fo keep da ting breathing.
Why write um now, when everything stay fine?
Cuz da version you write while calm stay da version you would actually stand behind, and da version you write inside one bad week wen get written by da bad week. Deciding one rule ahead of time stay one of da better studied ways fo make one plan survive contact with your own state of mind.
Get one bias with one name sitting underneath all dis. People stay in one course of action partly cuz of what dey wen already put in, and work on dat effect find da pull of time and money already spent show up strongest at exactly da moment somebody stay reconsidering one deal dat wen go bad. Dat's da month you least like be making da call fresh.
Da reverse stay true too, and nobody talk about um enough. Plenny people close one perfectly healthy business inside one bad month, cuz one slow week wen land on one hard one and no rule wen exist fo say da month was normal. One written line protect you both ways, and da second way save more businesses than da first.
One pre-mortem stay one useful hour right here. Da technique, described by Gary Klein in Harvard Business Review, is fo imagine stay two years from now and da ting wen close, den write down why. Da reasons you find stay da raw material fo your number, your date and your limit.
Writing one stop line going make me more likely fo quit?
In practice it do da opposite. One stop line not one plan fo quit. It's what let you stop reopening da whole venture every month and spend dat month selling instead.
Count da hours honest, on your own life instead of on some statistic. Reopening da question get one cost you can watch happening: da afternoon dat drift, da searching, da conversation with yourself at midnight. Whatevahs dat add up to across one year, it come straight out of da one activity dat would have moved da number.
Get one second effect dat stay harder fo measure and probably mo big. Nerve. You price higher, turn down da wrong customer, and put money into da part of da business dat need um, cuz you know exactly where your floor stay. No knowing if you even continuing make people hedge, and hedging stay expensive.
Den tell one person da line. Say um out loud, one time, to somebody who going remember. One line kept only inside your head get edited quiet and always downward. One line somebody else wen hear stay da same size you wen make um.
What happen on da day da number say stop?
You do da ting you wen write, and pausing count as doing um. Most stop lines not one choice between continuing and closing forever. Dey one choice between da current shape and one smaller shape dat cost way less fo keep alive.
Shapes dat no stay closing: da storefront become one stall, da full catalog become three products, da service become someting you do two evenings one month fo da clients you actually like. Every one of dose stay one live business with one lower monthly cost and one fraction of da pressure, and any of dem can grow again when someting change.
If it really stay closing, close um good and inside one week instead of across one year of half attention. Tell customers befo dey find out. Fill da orders you wen take. Pay whoevahs you owe first. Say what wen happen in one plain public sentence, no apology and no story, and keep da name.
Den take one month befo you decide what you tink about um. One business dat end not one verdict on you. It's one experiment run all da way to one conclusion by somebody who now know more about dea trade than almost anybody dey going meet, and plenny people who go on and build someting dat work get one of dese behind dem.
Da year two problem, and holding somebody else's line
Ideas not what run out in year two. Stamina stay. Da founder of KEEP CALM say he wen hustle all his life and wen find ways fo stay calm through um, and dat training was one of da ways he wen carry da pressure of building one career. Dat's his account of his own twenty years, not one prescription, and da shape of um stay worth borrowing: da ordinary maintenance, da sleep, da movement, da food, no stay separate from da business. It's da equipment da business run on.
Da other half of telling one person your line is holding dea line. Ask somebody you respect what dea number and dea date stay, write both down, and put one note in your calendar fo ask dem on dat date. It cost you one message twice one year. What come back no stay sentimental: one person who know somebody going ask read dea own line mo honest, and so going you.
Den read yours again one time one year, on one date you pick today. Most years you going change nothing and get back to work. Dat's what one stop line stay for. It's not one warning about wanting too much. It's da paperwork dat let you want plenny, out loud, fo one real long time.
