DISCIPLINE · THE SETUP

Discipline Not One Personality Trait, It's One Set of Arrangements

Discipline not one trait you wen get issued or wen get denied. It's four arrangements: da habit sized small, kept close, run at one fixed time, and protected by one rule you wen write ahead of time, and when you change dem you change da trait.

Somebody you know been training four mornings one week for four years. Dey not mo impressive than you in any other room. Dey not smarter, dey no like um mo than you, and if you wen sit down with dem for one hour you would find out dey get da same argument with demself on one cold Tuesday dat you get.

What dey get is one gym eleven minutes from da house, one bag packed da night befo, one standing slot at six thirty dat nobody book over, and one rule about what count on one bad morning dat dey wen write down years ago and never renegotiate. Four small facts about dea week, and none of um is one fact about dea character.

Dat stay way better news than talent would have been. Talent you either wen get or you neva. Arrangements you can copy this week, and you can copy um one at a time.

Maybe I just not one disciplined person?

Nah, and da question stay pointed at da wrong thing. Discipline is what one good set of arrangements look like from da outside. Arrangements stay visible, cheap, and anybody can borrow um.

Easy fo make da mistake, because da machinery invisible from where you standing. You see da person at da gym at six thirty. You no see da bag by da door, da alarm dat neva move in four years, da fact dat da gym stay on da way to work instead of one detour, or da one sentence dey tell demself when dey wake up sore. All of dat stay setup. What reach you is somebody who look like dey like um mo than you do.

Researchers keep landing in da same place. In one 2016 review in Perspectives on Psychological Science, Angela Duckworth and colleagues make da case dat da most effective self-control stay situational: you change da circumstances befo da impulse show up instead of fighting da impulse after it stay already dea. Dey also point out how come this stay underrated. When one person arrange dea life good it look easy, so we give credit to da character and never see da design.

So da useful question not whether you get discipline. Da question is which arrangement you missing.

What da four arrangements?

Size, location, time, and da rule for one miss. Almost every habit dat survive one hard year get one answer for all four, and almost every habit dat make die get at least one of um missing.

  • Size. How small is da version dat still count? Not da version you like on one good day. Da version dat fit inside your worst day of da month.
  • Location. Where it live, and how many steps away it stay right now? Not da room. Da exact spot.
  • Time. When it happen in one normal week? One fixed slot beat one floating intention, because one floating intention gotta win one argument every single day.
  • Da rule for one miss. What happen when you skip? Decide um ahead of time, in writing, on one calm day, because one tired brain at ten at night not going invent one fair rule.

Dose four answers fit on one index card, which is exactly where dey belong. Write um out for one habit you been trying fo hold for one year and you probably going find you can only answer two of da four. Dat's da whole diagnosis, and it wen take ninety seconds.

No add one fifth. Four stay short enough fo remember while you standing at da door with your jacket half on.

None of this lower da target. Da arrangements exist so one big target can survive contact with one real calendar, and da founder of KEEP CALM tell his own version of um plain. He wen hustle all his life for what he get, wen find ways fo stay calm through um, and wen get where he was going, and dose two things wen run together da whole way instead of taking turns. Training was one of da arrangements dat wen carry um, not one break from da work but da thing dat let him keep absorbing da pressure of building one career. Read da colleague in da first paragraph da same way. Dey not holding one four year gym habit because dey satisfied with less. Dey holding um because dea setup better than yours, and setup is da part you can change by Thursday.

How come da same habit work for somebody else and not for me?

Because you wen copy dea behavior and leave da setup behind. Da visible part of anodda person habit is da least useful part of um, and da part dat actually hold stay boring, physical, and specific to dea week.

So ask better questions of da person you copying. Not what dey do. Where it happen, how far away, when it happen, what dey do when dey miss. Usually you going find da answer you needed was something like "da pool stay on my way home" or "I wen stop scheduling anything befo eight." Dose stay portable. Dea willpower is not.

This also explain how come da same program work for one friend and collapse for anodda. Two people run da same plan through two different weeks, and da week win.

How I fix one habit dat keep failing?

Audit da setup befo you audit yourself, and go through da four in order. Start with size, because dat's where da fault usually sit, and da fix is fo cut da daily unit in half without touching da goal.

Den check location, because objects migrate. Da guitar go back in da case, da running shoes go in da closet, da notebook end up under one pile of mail. Notting announce this. You just do da thing less, and you conclude something about yourself instead of about da closet.

Den check time. One habit with no slot stay competing with every other thing dat could happen at dat hour, and it going lose mo than it win.

Den check da rule for one miss, which most people never wen write at all. Habit research summarized in da British Journal of General Practice wen find dat automaticity plateau on average around 66 days, and dat missing da occasional chance fo do da behavior neva seriously mess up da process, because da gains wen resume after one missed session. Da habit stay mo tough than your feelings about da habit. One written rule is how you stop one skipped session from turning into one verdict.

What if I wen fix all four and it still slip?

Den put one person inside da time arrangement. Almost nobody cancel on somebody who stay waiting for dem da way dey cancel on demself, and da version dat work da best not finding one partner but being one.

Twenty minutes one week holding somebody else plan going do mo for your own than anodda app will, and it work for one unglamorous reason: you going keep one appointment made for dea sake dat you would have quietly moved if it was only yours. Dat's one subject of its own and it get its own article.

Da trait show up after da arrangements do

Here da part worth keeping. People who look disciplined not spending mo effort than you. Most of da time dey spending less, because dey wen move da cost from da moment of deciding to da moment of designing, and design happen one time.

So take one ordinary Tuesday and answer da four questions in writing. Size um to your worst day. Put um three steps away. Give um one slot with one real time on um. Write da rule for one miss befo you need um. Den run um for one month without judging yourself even one time, and judge da setup instead.

You not trying fo become one different kine person. You trying fo go harder for longer than you can right now, and da arrangements are how da wanting survive one whole year. Get um right and da trait show up on its own, wearing your name.
