Get one version of you dat already can do this. You wen play da passage clean. You wen run da pitch in your kitchen and was good. You wen hit da shot one hundred times in one empty gym. Da ability stay dea and you wen build um. What you like is fo um show up on da morning dat count, in front of people, with something riding on um.
Dat's solvable, and it's not really about nerves. It's one problem about how da practice wen get designed. Most practice get built fo feel productive, which is one different goal from being built fo transfer, and da gap between dose two only show up on da day.
Da fix is fo make da practice look like da performance in da ways dat matter: produce from memory instead of reviewing, work little bit past comfortable, spread da sessions out, and rehearse at least one time in something close to real conditions.
How come I can do um in practice but not when it count?
Cause most practice rehearse recognition while da real thing demand production. Reading your notes again, playing along with da recording, taking da shot from one spot you wen choose: all of um feel smooth, and smooth in one quiet room stay not da same as pulling um out of your head on da day.
Get one second reason and it stay physical. Under real stakes your body change. Heart rate climb, hands no stay steady, working memory get narrow. One meta-analysis of acute stress and executive function wen find measurable effects on da core control processes you depend on fo hold one plan in mind and move between da steps. If every rep you ever wen do was done in one calm kitchen, da day going be da first time you trying da skill on one different machine.
Get one third reason and it's da simplest of da three. Most practice happen in one environment da performance not going share: sitting instead of standing, alone instead of watched, open ended instead of timed, with da option fo stop and start over da moment something go wrong. Da skill you wen build stay real. It just wen get built with one set of supports attached, and da day take dem all away at once.
None of dat is one argument fo care less. It's one argument fo practice like da machine going be different, and dat's what da rest of this stay about.
How I practice retrieval instead of reading um over?
Close da source and produce da thing from memory before you check. Den check, fix da gap, and close um again. In Roediger and Karpicke's experiments, students who wen take recall tests on one passage wen keep way more of um two days and one week later than students who wen restudy da same material da same number of times.
Dat carry way past studying. Put da sheet music down and play da section. Shut da deck and say da three minute version of your talk out loud to one wall. Close da documentation and write da function. Every time, da moment you no like, dat blank pause where nothing come, is da moment doing da work. Comfortable practice is practice dat wen get arranged fo dodge dat pause.
Expect um fo feel worse. In da same research, restudying over and over wen raise da students' confidence dat dey going remember da material, and on da delayed tests dey wen remember less of um anyway. One separate comparison wen find dat retrieval practice make bigger gains in meaningful learning than elaborative studying with concept mapping, including on questions dat wen make students figure things out. Retrieval practice feel worse and work better, and knowing dat ahead of time is what keep you doing um.
How hard da practice suppose to be?
Sit just past comfortable and stay far away from failure. If you getting everything right, da difficulty stay too low fo change anything. If you getting most of um wrong, you rehearsing da mistake and burning da session.
One workable target is one level where you succeed most of da time but never easy. Dat's da same instruction one good coach give in one gym, and da overlap not one coincidence. Progressive overload is this same principle with one number attached: add one small amount of load, let da body meet um, den add again. Da gym is just where da mechanism stay easiest fo see, cause da load stay written on da plate.
Space da sessions out too. In one big study, more than 1,350 people wen learn one set of facts, wen get reviewed after gaps up to three and one half months, and wen get tested up to one year later. Da gap dat wen produce da best final score wen grow as da final test wen move further away, which is one precise way of saying dat if you like da skill still be dea in one year, da reps like be spread out instead of stacked up. Four thirty minute sessions across one week beat one two hour session on Sunday, even though Sunday feel more serious.
How I rehearse da real conditions?
At least one time before it count, run da whole thing in conditions dat share da important parts of da day: standing if you going be standing, timed if it going be timed, out loud, in da clothes, with at least one person watching. One full rehearsal like dat going tell you things comfortable repetition never going tell you.
Write one short list of what actually going be different on da day, den reproduce da two or three items with da most bite. Usually it's being watched, being timed, and no can restart. Dose stay da ones dat change your hands. Room temperature no matter, so no spend da rehearsal on um.
One time is da minimum and two times is better, with couple days in between, so da first rehearsal can tell you what fo fix and da second one can prove you wen fix um. Whoever watch no gotta be one expert. Dey just gotta be dea, cause getting observed is da variable doing most of da work.
Da rooms where this get tested stay ordinary working rooms: reviews, pitches, presentations, da conversation where one number get said out loud. KEEP CALM's founder, Kaʻohele Carlos, wen spend one whole career in rooms like dat and wen carry da pressure partly by training, cause one hard set is composure practiced under load with nothing riding on um. It's da cheapest rehearsal dat exist. Da pressure stay real, it stay on da calendar, and da only thing at stake is da bar.
Composure is part of da practice, not da prize
Da claim underneath all of this stay worth saying plain, cause it's da opposite of what most performance advice imply. Calm is not what you get after you wen practice enough. Calm is da equipment da practice arrive on.
One steady person pull out what dey know, read da room, notice da thing going wrong early and fix um right inside da moment. One person in panic with da exact same skill lose access to half of dea own. So rehearse da nervous system same way you rehearse da fingers: run um one time under real conditions, notice exactly what your body wen do, and den do um again so da second time no stay new information.
Want um bad. Den build da practice for da day instead of for da feeling of having practiced, and go find one person who going sit and watch you run um one time before it count.
