NEGOTIATION · THE NUMBER

Ask Fo Yourself Da Same Way You Ask Fo Somebody Else

You already argue betta fo odda people than fo yourself, so write your case in da third person first, den read um back wit your own name inside. Championing odda people stay not one detour from your own ask, it's da training fo um.

Think about da last time you wen argue fo somebody else. Maybe you wen get one teammate da title dey already been doing da work of, or wen tell one client how come da person on your team was worth da rate. You was specific. You was unbothered. You neva apologize one time.

Dat person stay one excellent negotiator, and you wen meet dem already, cause dey you. Den da same conversation come around wit your own name inside and da voice go thin, da number get one range attached, and one perfectly good case turn into one hope.

Dis is not one flaw dat need fixing wit more confidence. It's one leva, and it's da most useful ting in dis whole category, cause it mean da skill stay already installed and already rehearsed. You no gotta become bolder. You gotta get your own case out of da first person fo ten minutes.

How come I can negotiate fo odda people but not fo myself?

Cause da social risk feel different, not cause da skill stay different. Advocating fo somebody else read as loyalty, and advocating fo yourself feel like it might read as greed, so da identical sentence feel safe in one mouth and dangerous in da odda.

Dat instinct is not imaginary, and it's worth reporting precise instead of broad. In one well known set of experiments, women bargaining on dea own behalf wen expect one social penalty fo being assertive and wen concede more cause of um, and da same women wen bargain just as assertive as da men in da study da moment dey was representing one friend. Da men in dat research wen show no such gap. One separate line of research wen find dat evaluators did penalize candidates fo starting one negotiation at all, and penalized women more than men fo doing um. So fo some readers da caution stay documented, and fo da rest it's still da ting quietly setting da number.

Da useful conclusion is not dat you should be more scared. It's dat da advocate voice, da one dat get specific and no flinch, stay already yours and stay already proven in front of odda people. It's available. It just stay filed unda somebody else's name.

How I write my case da way I would write somebody else's?

Write da whole ting in da third person first, wit dea name inside, den swap in your own name and change nothing else. Read both out loud, one afta da odda.

Draft one, fo one colleague:

Priya been running da platform roadmap since January witout da title. She wen bring da migration in two weeks early, and now she da person da support team escalate to. Da band fo dat work stay one hundred and forty. She should be at one hundred and forty.

Draft two, da same case, your name:

I been running da platform roadmap since January witout da title. I wen bring da migration in two weeks early, and now I da person da support team escalate to. Da band fo dat work stay one hundred and forty. I should be at one hundred and forty.

Most people no can write da second one witout softening um. Words show up dat neva was in da first draft: "kinda", "wen help wit", "I think maybe", "if dat sound reasonable". Dat gap, visible in your own handwriting, is da exact amount you discounting yourself, and it stay way more persuasive than any amount of encouragement, cause you da one who wen produce da evidence.

Write draft one, den draft two, den delete anyting from draft two dat no stay in draft one. What left is your ask.

Who I should be sponsoring, and how I actually do um?

One mentor talk to you. One sponsor say your name in one room you not in. Da second one is da one dat move careers, and it's da one most people not receiving, which is why doing um on purpose stay worth so much.

Da gap stay measured, not folklore. One Catalyst survey of more than 4,000 high potentials, reported in Harvard Business Review, wen find dat more women than men had mentors and was still paid less and promoted less, cause only sponsorship involve advocacy fo advancement.

Sponsoring is not one feeling and it no need one program. Pick two people whose work you can honestly vouch fo. Den say dea name, out loud, to da people who decide about dem, wit one specific claim attached and one specific outcome requested. "Priya wen run da migration and brought um in two weeks early. She should be on da shortlist fo da platform lead role." Dat's da whole move. It cost one sentence, and fo da person on da receiving end it's da difference between being known and being considered.

Do um three times dis quarter, in three different rooms. Notice how you sound while you doing um: precise, no hesitation, no range, no hedge, no apology fo da number. Dat's da voice. It's da same one your own case going need on Tuesday, and you wen use um recent enough now fo find um again.

Get one accounting reality worth stating too, cause dis pillar no pretend generosity stay free. Vouching fo somebody put little bit of your credibility on da table. Dat's da point. Dat's also why it work: one claim dat cost da speaker someting is da only kind anybody believe.

What I say when I commend somebody in public?

Name da person, name da exact ting dey wen do, and say um in front of da people whose opinion of dem actually matta. Vague praise stay noise, and "great job everybody" do nothing fo nobody in da room.

Da shape stay short. "I like flag someting. When da payment provider wen go down on Thursday, Marcus wen rewrite da retry logic in one afternoon and we neva lose one order. Dat was his call and it was da right one." Three sentences, one specific act, one named person, delivered where dea manager or dea client can hear um.

It cost da giva one sentence and it land on da receiva like one career event, which stay one rate of return you no going find nowhere else in one working week. Two rules keep um honest. Say um only when it's true, cause inflated praise devalue da next real ting you say. And no attach um to one favor. Da moment commendation get traded fo someting, it stop being commendation and become one transaction people can feel.

What three tings my own ask gotta contain?

One number, one reason grounded in da work, and one date fo one answa. Everyting else stay optional, and most of what people add stay padding dey regret lata.

Da number is one single figure, not one range, said as one complete sentence. Da reason is one line about what you own now dat you neva own befo, not three lines about how hard you been working, cause ownership stay checkable and effort no stay. Da date turn one pleasant conversation into one decision: "Can you come back to me by da end of da month?" is not aggressive, it's one calendar, and witout um your ask join one list nobody reading.

Say da three, den stop talking and let dem think. You wen make dis exact case fo odda people, at dis exact length, witout breaking one sweat. Nothing about um stay harder cause da name wen change.

Da habit and da ask stay da same twenty years

KEEP CALM's founder, Kaʻohele Carlos, put giving back among da reasons his career wen work at all. In his words, anodda secret to his success stay giving back, doing volunteer work, always looking fo opportunities fo coach, train, advise, lift up, commend and champion dose in his sphere, and he say da positive energy and support he wen get back was tenfold. Dat's his account of his own twenty years instead of one law you can bank on, and da detail dat matta fo Tuesday is da timing. He neva start afta he wen arrive. He wen do um da whole way up, while he was still hustling and still short of da standing he wanted.

Read practical, dat's one training plan. Every time you make one hard case fo somebody else you rehearsing unda real conditions, wit one real audience and real stakes, and you building one reputation as da person who build people, which is one ting hiring managers pay fo. Den you walk into your own review having argued fo one number several times already dis year.

Ask fo yourself da same way you ask fo somebody else. Same evidence, same figure, same steady voice. You wen do da hard version already.
