You wen quote one number you believe in. It stay built on what da work actually take, what it worth to da person paying, and what your year gotta add up to. Den da reply come, friendly and reasonable: get any flexibility on dat?
Dis stay one good moment. One client asking about flexibility is one client looking for one way fo say yes, and you stay two sentences away from either one clean deal or one quietly smaller year. Most people fill dose two sentences with one discount, cause one discount end da awkwardness da fastest.
Get one better move and it stay short enough fo memorize. Hold da number and move da scope. You no defend da price, you no explain your overheads, and you no shave ten percent fo keep da room warm. You tell dem what come out of da work for da figure dey wen name, and you let dem choose.
What I say when one client ask for one discount?
Say what you can take out for dat number, den stop talking. "I no move on da rate, but I can work to dat budget. For dat figure I going take out da second revision round and da launch support, and everything else stay exactly like I wen quote."
Dat's one calm sentence with one real option inside um, and it hand da decision back without one fight. Notice what it no more inside. No apology, no story about your costs, no hedging phrase like "I suppose I could maybe." Deepak Malhotra's guidance on concessions at da Program on Negotiation stay blunt about dis: concessions no automatically make goodwill, and one you neva label going get overlooked or played down, cause noticing um would oblige da other side fo give something back.
Den stay quiet. Da silence no stay rude. It stay da client doing arithmetic, which is exactly da work you like dem doing.
Why one small discount cost more den it look?
Cause ten percent off da price stay almost never ten percent off da job. Da hours stay da same, da tools stay da same, da tax stay da same, and da whole cut come out of da part you was going keep. Do da arithmetic on your own numbers. If one third of your price is profit, taking ten percent off da price take about one third off what you keep.
Da second cost is slower and bigger. One price dat move when somebody push teach everybody who wen watch dat your price move when somebody push. Clients talk. Da one who wen get ten percent tell da next person fo ask, and now every quote you send open one negotiation you neva like. Da number stop being one number and become one starting bid.
Get one third cost dat never show up on da invoice. Work sold at one rate you resent going get done at one standard you resent. Not on purpose, but attention follow value, and da project you feel underpaid on is da project dat slip.
How I decide what fo take out instead of cutting da price?
Decide um before anybody ask. Write your service down as one list of parts, put one rough cost in hours next to each one, and mark which parts stay da core and which stay extras. When da discount question land, you den reading off one list instead of making um up under pressure.
Good things fo take out stay da parts dat cost you real time and stay honestly optional: extra revision rounds, rush turnaround, standing meetings, training, post-launch support, custom reporting, da on-site day. Bad things fo take out stay da parts dat make da work good, cause one cheap version dat fail is worse for both of you den one warm no.
Negotiation researchers call dis trading across issues instead of splitting one single number, and dat's why one stuck price stay rarely one stuck deal. Price is one variable. Timeline, scope, payment terms and who do da prep stay variables too, and most of dem worth less to da other side den cash.
One more thing fo get ready: one smaller package with its own name and its own number. "Da starter version is four thousand and hea stay exactly what it include." One client who no can afford da full thing now wen get offered something real instead of getting turned away.
What if dey say yes to da smaller version, or dey walk away?
Both of dose stay fine, and one of dem is one win you neva going get by discounting. One client who take da smaller package wen buy at your rate, which mean da relationship start on honest ground and can grow later. One client who leave cause you neva going hand ovah da full scope for less was going be expensive some other way.
Walking is da part people dread, so be precise about um. Before any pricing conversation, know da figure below which you rather spend da time on something else. Dat's not one mood, it's one decision you make on one quiet afternoon, and dat's da thing dat keep your voice level when somebody push. Negotiators call da thing you would do instead your best alternative, and da whole point of knowing um is dat you stop guessing halfway through one sentence.
Den say no da way you would like get told no. Warm, short, no lecture. "Dat stay below what I can do dis good, so I going pass on dis one. If da budget change I would love take one more look."
Who supposed to get my work for free, and how I decide?
Decide um one time one year, on one calendar, and give um to people you wen pick, not to whoevahs pushing da hardest. One discount granted under pressure no stay generosity, it stay erosion, and da two get mixed up all da time by people who stay honestly generous.
Hea's da split dat keep both halves healthy. Hold your number with da people who paying you. Separate and on purpose, choose who get your actual craft dis year for nothing: one nonprofit, one person starting out, one afternoon one month. Volunteering da skill you get paid for stay worth several times volunteering one evening of general help, cause one hour of da thing you stay expert at move something nobody else in dat room could move.
Dis no stay one moral add-on. It stay what protect da price. Once you wen already decide where your free work go, one discount request stop feeling like one test of your kindness, and you get one easy, true sentence for da moment: "I no discount, and I do give couple projects one year away outright. Dis one no stay dat, so hea's what I can take out for your number."
KEEP CALM's founder put giving back among da reasons his own career wen work, done da whole way up, not after he wen make um, and he say what wen come back was tenfold. Dat's his account of his own twenty years, not one promise attached to your invoice. Da smaller and more reliable version stay still worth having: da people you help early going remember um, and work arrive from directions you neva could plan.
Holding one price stay one habit you build one time and use for years
Da first time you hold one number while somebody push, your pulse tell you it wen go bad even when it wen go fine. Da second time is easier. By da fifth time it's one sentence you say, and da whole thing take four seconds.
Dat's what composure stay for hea. Not calm instead of ambition, calm in service of um. You like more, you intend fo go get um, and one steady voice is da tool dat let you ask without flinching and stay easy fo work with on Monday. Da clients worth keeping no stay offended by one firm price. Dey stay reassured by um, cause somebody who know what dea work cost usually know what dea work is.
Write da parts list dis week. Decide da number you no going go under. Choose who get your craft for free dis year. After dat da next discount request no stay one test of anything. It's just one Tuesday.
