You stay good at your job and you fully intend for get paid proper for um. So when one colleague let dea number slip over lunch and turn out it stay bigger than yours, for work dat look plenty like yours, da useful thing for know is dat somebody just wen hand you something valuable. Most people go years without one single reliable data point about what dea work really worth, and you wen get one for free, over one sandwich, from somebody who wen take one small risk for say um out loud.
Da feeling in your chest stay real and it going pass. Da number no going pass, if you write um down. What happen next stay one procedure instead of one mood, and it start dis afternoon instead of in three weeks, when da sting wen fade and nothing wen change.
One colleague earn more than me for da same job. What I should do first?
Write dea number down, today, together with dea title, dea years of experience and da date. Now dat stay da first point in one range you building, and one range stay da thing you eventually ask against.
Do dis before you do anything else, cause da number stay perishable in one way da feeling no stay. In one week you going remember dat um was more, and you going lose da digits. On paper, next to one title and one date, um become evidence. Inside your head um stay one grievance, and grievances no survive one compensation conversation.
Write down what you know about da shape of dea job too, in one line: what dey own, who dey report to, how long dey stay doing um. You no building one case against anybody, you building one comparison dat going hold up when somebody senior push back on um, and vague comparisons no hold up.
Den close da notebook. You no making one decision dis afternoon. You collecting.
How I going get through da rest of da afternoon?
Get up and walk somewhere for ten minutes, breathe out longer than you breathe in, and no send nothing to nobody. Researchers at Stanford wen test dat exhale-heavy pattern for five minutes one day across one month and wen find um lift mood more than mindfulness meditation did, which stay one big return on one very small physical instruction. Da feeling stay one comparison response, it stay loud, and it fade if you refuse for feed um.
What you protecting yourself from stay da reactive version of dis: da message to one friend dat get screenshotted, da cold reply to da colleague who wen tell you, da resignation drafted at four in da afternoon dat you going take back at nine da next morning. Nothing you send today stay better than da same thing sent on Monday, and plenty of um stay worse.
Getting told what somebody earn also tend for land like one verdict on how you been doing, and dat reading stay wrong on da facts. Salaries get set by when dey wen hire you, what you wen ask for at da time, which team had budget dat quarter, and how da market was moving in da month somebody wen sign one piece of paper. Another person's salary stay data about da market, and no stay one verdict on you.
How I turn one number into one range worth asking against?
Get two more data points for da same role and rough location, den take da top of da three as your target. One number stay one anecdote, two stay one coincidence and three stay one market rate you can say out loud without your voice shaking.
Where da other two come from, in da order dat actually work. People you already know who do your job somewhere else, asked plain, cause most people going tell you if you tell dem yours first. Public salary bands in job listings for your role, wherever employers publish um, which stay da least awkward source get. Recruiters, who going give you one range in one phone call and stay getting paid for know. And any published pay data for your own occupation and country, which stay free for read and going at least keep you from being way off.
Den set one date. Da single most common failure right here no stay getting da wrong number, it stay getting da right number and doing nothing with um for one year. Put da ask in one specific week, in writing, before da feeling fade, cause da feeling stay da fuel and fuel no keep.
What if get one real reason dey earn more?
Sometimes get, and finding out stay one good outcome instead of one bad one. Dey might get one scope you no get, one market rate for one mo scarce skill, or one negotiation dey wen run better than you wen run yours, and each of those tell you exactly what for do next.
One field experiment published by da National Bureau of Economic Research wen find dat people hold big misperceptions about what dea managers earn and smaller but real misperceptions about dea peers, which cut both ways. Da gap you imagining might be smaller than um feel, and um might be plenty bigger. Neither one stay knowable from one lunch.
What stay worth doing, once you know which one um is, stay asking da question dat turn um into one plan: what I would need to be doing for my number for look like deirs. If da answer stay one scope, ask for da scope. If um stay one skill, book da course. If um stay one conversation, have da conversation. Every version of dat answer stay actionable, which stay why finding one real reason stay better news than finding none.
Get da honest possibility too dat you simply neva ask. Dat stay worth saying without any shame attached, cause um stay da most fixable version of dis story. People no get paid what dey worth, dey get paid what wen get agreed, and da agreement was one conversation somebody wen start. Dis year you get for be da person who start um.
Be da person who say da number out loud
Somebody wen tell you what dey earn, at some risk to demselves, and most likely dat stay da most useful thing dat wen happen to your career all year. Da accurate feeling toward dat person stay gratitude, not comparison, and stay worth registering dat before da afternoon close.
Den do da same back, cause dat stay da fastest way for raise da range you get measured against. Da people who know what work stay worth ask for more, get more, and pull da band up behind dem. Da people who no know accept da first offer and hold da band down for everybody. Which of those happen at your workplace over da next five years get decided by whether anybody say one real number out loud, and now you stay somebody who can.
Two rules make um one move instead of one mood. Give your own number and never somebody else's, cause da second one stay somebody else's for give. And give um to da person um help, quiet, instead of to da whole room. Research on information avoidance show dat people going turn down useful, free information when um might carry one verdict, so da offer often gotta come from you instead of get requested.
No get any obligation in any of dis, and no guilt for staying quiet. You wen have one hard afternoon and you allowed for spend um on your own numbers. But da range you going be asking against next year stay getting set right now, by people talking or not talking, and one plain sentence from you move um further than any amount of hoping da market notice.
