Da Ninety Seconds Before You Go On

You get about ninety seconds between da last thing you can control and da first thing you say. Spend um on three moves: one long breath out, one silent run of your opening line, and one look at three real faces.

You know da material. You wen run um more times than anybody in dat room going eva know about, and da work behind you stay real. Now you standing in one hallway, one wing, one stairwell or one parked car, and da door stay about ninety seconds away. This is da strangest window in da whole thing. Everything you could do for be ready stay already done, and get still time on da clock for fill.

Most people fill um bad. Dey reread notes dat not going go in. Dey run da middle section dat was neva da problem. Dey pick up da phone and read something dat get nothing for do with da next ten minutes. None of dat is one flaw in you. It's ninety unassigned seconds, and unassigned time get taken by whateva stay loudest in your head.

So assign um. Three moves, in order, and den you walk in.

What should I do in da ninety seconds before I go on?

Do three things, in this order: breathe out longer than you breathe in, two times; run your opening line silently, one time; den find three real faces and look at dem. Dat sequence fit inside ninety seconds and it remove da three things most likely for cost you da first minute, which stay one heart running ahead of your voice, one blank start, and one room dat feel like one wall instead of people.

Da order matter more than it look. Da body go first, cause you no can talk one system down while it still speeding up. Da opening line go second, cause da start is da one part of any performance where one stumble snowball. Da faces go last, cause dey da first thing you going need once you begin, and choosing dem ahead of time mean you not hunting for somewhere for look while you saying your first sentence.

Notice what no stay on da list. No get one instruction for relax, no attempt for feel any different than you feel, and no final review of da content. You not trying for arrive calm in da flat kine way. You trying for arrive with your heart under your own control, your first ten words already decided, and somewhere specific for put your eyes.

Why does one long breath out steady you faster than one deep breath?

Cause da settling happen on da way out, not on da way in. Breathing in nudge da heart rate up little bit and breathing out bring um down, so one breath where da exit stay longer than da entry tip da balance toward settling within couple cycles, whether or not you believe um.

Da version worth learning take about fifteen seconds. Breathe in through da nose, add one second short sip of air on top of da first, den let one long slow breath out through da mouth till you empty. Do dat two times. Researchers at Stanford wen run one randomized trial comparing three five minute breathing practices against mindfulness meditation ova one month, and da exhale-focused one, which dey wen call cyclic sighing, made da biggest improvement in mood and da biggest drop in breathing rate. One systematic review of slow breathing techniques across fifteen studies wen find da same family of effects: more heart rate variability, one shift toward da calming branch of da nervous system, and reports of feeling alert and in control instead of sleepy.

Dat last part is why this move belong in one hallway, not one bedroom. Slow breathing done this way no make you soft or drowsy. It take da top off da surge and leave da energy in place, which is exactly da trade you like ninety seconds before one room turn for look at you.

Should I run da whole thing one more time?

Nah. Run your opening line only, silently, one time. One full run in da last two minutes spend da working memory you about for need, and it hand you fresh doubt at da one moment you no can do nothing about um.

Get one measurable difference in how skilled and less skilled performers use dea thinking, and it no stay one difference in nerve. In one study of golfers asked for think out loud while dey played, da higher skilled players wen plan da shot dey was about for play on 82 percent of dea shots, against 52 percent for da lower skilled players. Planning is deciding one thing and den doing um, which is finished work. Rereading is unfinished work, and it going happily fill any silence you give um.

You can copy da result without copying da twenty years. Decide your first sentence ahead of time, word for word, and rehearse only dat. One locked opening do two useful things at once. It get you moving before your judgment fully come back online, and once you moving da rest of da material stay easier for reach, cause you running one track you already been down instead of starting from one blank page in front of one audience.

Where should I look in da first ten seconds?

At three real faces, picked before you start. Take one on da left, one in da middle and one on da right, and give each one of dem one whole sentence of eye contact instead of one sweep across da room.

One room you neva look at is one abstraction, and abstractions stay scary in one way dat individual people no stay. Da minute you talking to somebody specific who looking back, da size of da room no stay da point no more. Three is da right number cause it cover da width of most spaces, it small enough for remember while your pulse stay up, and it stop you from locking onto da one person who happen to be frowning at dea laptop for reasons dat get nothing for do with you.

Pick dem in da first two seconds after you arrive, and stay away from da person you most like impress. Choose faces dat stay simply open, cause you borrowing dea steadiness for your opening, not auditioning for dea approval. On one video call da same move work with da camera and two thumbnails: da lens for your first sentence, den two people who stay visibly present, den back to da lens.

What if my hands shaking and my mouth stay dry?

Both is da surge doing its job, and both get one physical answer. Shake your hands and feet out hard for five seconds where nobody can see you, den take one mouthful of water and swallow um slow.

Da shake is unspent activation. Hold still and try for suppress um and it stay in your hands, where it show up in da first page you holding. Let um finish somewhere it no cost you nothing. Den roll your shoulders back and down, cause da same surge pull dem toward your ears, and one raised chest make one voice thinner than it gotta be.

Da dry mouth is da same system moving resources around. Water fix um, and da deliberate swallow is one quiet signal to your own body dat nothing stay chasing you. Do um before you go on, not while you speaking, and go easy on da caffeine in da hour before, cause dat add to one heart rate already doing plenty.

Den say da true sentence, not da false one. "I stay ready" is accurate, it no argue with what you feeling, and it point da energy at da task. "I stay fine" is one claim your body can see right through.

Ninety seconds is one routine, not one rescue

Da reason for have something for run in this window no stay dat you fragile. It's dat you plan on keep doing this, in bigger rooms, for years, and da people who last is da ones who wen make da last two minutes boring on purpose.

One routine stay repeatable in one way dat one good mood no stay. Anybody can be excellent on da day da room stay warm and dey wen sleep good. What carry one career is having something for run when da room stay cold, da flight was late and da person before you was real good. Two breaths, one line, three faces. It work in one hallway, one parking lot or da corner of one stage, and it stay da same on da day you feel unstoppable as on da day you no feel um.

Those three moves also fit on one card, and one card in your pocket beat one plan in your head when da clock stay at ninety seconds. Write yours down one time and den stop rewriting um. Da whole point of one routine is dat future you no gotta think.

Den go and like um. Nothing here is about wanting um any less.
