AMBITION · ENOUGH

Decide How Much Is Enough Befo You Get Dea

Name your enough befo you get close to um: one number, one title, o one condition, written down wit one date wen you going check um. If you decide um lata, right in da middle of winning, da line going move every time you reach um.

You wen set one number two years ago and last month you wen hit um. Um felt da way you wen expect fo about one day, den da day wen pau, and by Friday you wen already say one bigga number out loud to somebody. Nothing wrong wit you. Dat's jus what one target do wen um defined by motion instead of by one line, and um happen to capable people mo dan anybody, cuz they da ones who keep clearing da bar.

Get one fix and um not glamorous. You decide what enough look like ahead of time, in writing, while nothing stay on da line yet and da decision stay cheap. Not so you going want less. So da ting you want get one edge on um, and so on one regular Tuesday you can tell whedda you winning.

Why da finish line keep moving?

Cuz your expectations rise wit your results, and they rise fasta dan you notice. Researchers been measuring dis since 1978, wen Brickman, Coates and Janoff-Bulman wen compare big lottery winnas wit people who neva win and found da winnas was no happia dan da control group, and got less pleasure out of regular everyday tings.

Lata work wen sharpen dat picture instead of jus repeating um. Diener, Lucas and Scollon wen review da adaptation research and found dat people no jus return to one neutral baseline afta everyting: set points stay different between people, they stay different across parts of one life, and they can move unda some conditions. So dis not one rule dat nothing you achieve going eva count. Um one narrower and mo useful finding. Da satisfaction from hitting one specific number fade fasta dan da effort um wen take fo get dea, and da mind quietly re-base on da new normal.

Da practical result is da one dat cost people years. If enough is always whateva come next, den enough by definition stay somewea you not, and you can run one twenty year career without eva arriving nowea. Naming da line ahead of time no make you less ambitious dan da person who refuse to. Um make you da one who going be able fo tell wen they wen win.

What one enough line look like on paper?

One sentence, in your own handwriting, naming da number, da title, o da condition wea dis particular ting stay pau. Den one date wen you allowed fo look at um again.

Three shapes cova almost everyting:

  • One number. Revenue, salary, savings, subscribers. Specific enough dat one stranger could tell you if you wen hit um.
  • One title o one position. Da role, da credit, da seat in da room. Write da actual words, not da feeling you expect da words fo give you.
  • One condition. Dis da one most people skip and plenny times um da true answa. Enough is wen da business run one week without me. Enough is wen I can take da Friday. Enough is wen da work I do most days is da work I most good at.

Den write three prices dis want is not allowed fo cost, and make one of them physical: sleep, o training. Those da first two tings one ambitious person spend and da last two they can afford fo lose.

Writing um down change da odds, and dat's one measured claim, not one motivational one. One meta-analysis of mental contrasting wit implementation intentions, covering 21 studies and almost 16,000 participants, found one small to medium effect on reaching goals jus from da plain act of naming da outcome and writing da specific plan. Small effects compound ova one decade.

If I name one number, dat cap what I could do?

No, and dis objection deserve one straight answa, cuz um da reason most people neva write da line. One enough line is not one ceiling on ambition. Um one definition of da win, and one definition cap nothing. Um tell you which game you playing so you can play um right.

Two tings happen once da line exist. First, you stop paying da panic tax. Somebody who no know what winning look like read every quarter as evidence about their own worth, and dat's exactly da state wea people take bad deals, hire in one hurry and agree to tings on one phone call. Second, saying no get fasta, cuz now you can measure one request against someting specific. Most of what slow one ambitious person down is not lack of effort. Um da twenty commitments dat neva got checked against da target.

You allowed mo dan one line, one afta da odda. Hit dis one, take da week, den write da next one on purpose instead of drifting into um. Dat's da difference between ten years of compounding work and ten years of starting ova on one bigga number.

Everyting past da line is fo what?

Fo somebody else, decided in da same sitting and in da same handwriting. Da moment you name da point wea dis stay pau, you wen also name da point wea everyting afta um is surplus, and surplus wit no destination quietly turn into da new baseline, which move da target again and put you right back wea you wen start.

So write one second name on da same page. Not one cause and not one percentage. One person, plus one specific ting you going do fo them on your way to your own line. Say their name in one room they not in. Make da introduction you coulda kept. Give them one hour of da ting you get paid fo instead of one hour of general help.

Da founda of KEEP CALM describe giving back as one of da mechanisms rather dan da prize at da end. In his own words he wen hustle all his life, found ways fo stay calm through um, and got wea he was going, and da whole way up he was looking fo chances fo coach, advise, lift up, commend and champion da people in his sphere. He say what wen come back was ten times what he wen put in. Dat's his account of his own twenty years, offered as evidence and not as one law you should expect fo hold fo you. Da reason um belong on da same page as your number is practical: one goal wit anodda person inside um survive da year dat one purely private goal no survive.

Wen is um honest fo move da line?

On da date you wen write down, not on da afternoon you feel like um. Dat's da whole function of one check date. Um turn moving da line from one drift into one decision, and one decision leave one record.

Wen da date come, ask three questions in order. Da reason unda dis goal wen change, o only da number? You still going want da new line if nobody find out you wen reach um? And what da last twelve months wen cost against da three prices you said you no going pay? If da reason wen hold and da prices wen stay unpaid, moving da line is one legit call, and you write da new one down da same way you wen write da first.

Writing um down protect you da odda direction too. Sheldon and Elliot, tracking people through three longitudinal studies, found dat goals dat fit one person's own developing interests and values got mo sustained effort, was mo likely fo get reached, and gave back mo from getting reached. One line you check on one date is one line wea you can notice you wen stop believing in um, at da earliest possible moment instead of four years late.

Enough get decided while you still hungry

None of dis is one brake. Da point of naming da line early is dat you can go hard at da ting without stopping every couple months fo wonda whedda da ting worth going at, and dat question cost way mo dan da work.

Do um in da next hour, on paper: da sentence, da number o da condition, da three prices, da name of da person you carrying, and da date. Ten minutes. Den go back to work. In two years you either going hit um, and den you get fo feel um fo real, o you going change um on one date you wen pick, which is not quitting.

Da reason fo be precise now is dat you plan on doing dis fo one long time. Somebody who know what winning look like can push harda, cuz they pushing at someting wit one edge on um instead of at da horizon.
