Da raise wen land on one Thursday and was one good one. You wen ask for um da right way, you had da evidence ready, and da number wen move. On da drive home you was already running da math on da next one, and dat math no stay one flaw. It's da same machinery dat wen make dis raise, and you planning fo keep um running for anodda twenty years.
Somewhere between da on-ramp and your street, though, one mo quiet question show up. Not whether da raise was enough, cuz dat's one different article and one smaller one. Da question is what da number actually stay for.
Most careers get built fo buy two tings. Money is da first. Status is da second. Get one third ting sitting undaneath both of dem, most people neva one time wen say um out loud, and naming um is what turn twenty mo years of effort into someting dat compound instead of someting dat jus repeat.
What exactly is da third ting?
Money is da first ting, status is da second, and da third ting is whateva you would still be doing once dose two stay handled. It no stay one hobby and it no stay one retirement plan. It's da answer to what da money was suppose fo buy and who da standing was suppose fo get spent on, written in one sentence short enough fo say out loud inside one elevator.
Da first two stay real and notting here pretending odawise. Money buy options, and options is how one person stop making decisions out of fear. Status buy reach: da meeting you get into, da call dat get returned, da room where one decision about you happen witout you. Both worth working for. Both stay instruments too, and one instrument wit no music assigned to um slowly turn into one scoreboard.
Da research point da same way, and not toward da usual moral about money. Killingsworth, Kahneman and Mellers wen find dat well-being keep climbing wit income for most people instead of flattening out at some magic salary, which mean da popular line dat mo money not going make you mo happy no stay true da way people say um. What stay true is dat mo money answer one question you neva ask if you neva wen decide what it was for. Da third ting is dat decision, made one time, in writing, befo da next raise come.
Naming um going cost me da first two?
No, and da people most worried about dat usually da ones um help da most. One named third ting no lower da target, it aim um, and aimed effort survive years dat anxious effort no can.
KEEP CALM's founder, Kaʻohele Carlos, describe his own run in exactly two halves. He wen hustle all his life for what he wanted, and he wen find ways fo stay calm through um. Both halves carry weight. Composure neva was da prize at da end of da climb, it was da ting dat wen make twenty years of wanting plenny survivable, and dat's da reason he was still standing and still hungry when da next ting wen come up.
Dat's da practical case, and it hold up on one ordinary Tuesday. Panic make people take da first offer, quit da hard project in month four, and mistake motion for progress. Somebody wit one third ting written down going negotiate mo slow, wait betta, and can tell one opportunity from one distraction witout losing one week to um. Da third ting no stay one brake. It's one steering column.
How I find mine witout one retreat or one quiz?
Answer three questions in writing, one sitting, about twenty minutes. What da money stay for, in one line, no numbers inside. Who da status stay aimed at. And what would still be worth doing if both of dose stay handled already.
Take dem one at one time.
What da money stay for. Not da amount, da purpose. "Nobody in my family gotta ask one landlord for notting again" stay one answer. "Two million dollars" stay one scoreboard reading. If your line get one number inside, you wen describe da instrument one second time instead of da music.
Who da status stay aimed at. Standing always stay aimed at somebody. Sometimes one field, sometimes one old boss, sometimes one parent. Naming da audience no stay one accusation, it's one check. It tell you if da audience is one you would still pick today, and one surprising amount of capable people going find out dey been aiming at one room dey wen walk out of ten years ago.
What survive both getting handled. Picture da money handled and da standing handled. Tomorrow morning still going come. What you doing wit um? Whateva still standing once you take away da first two is da third ting, and usually it stay smaller, mo specific and mo awkward fo say out loud den people expect.
Now you get one sentence you neva one time wen write down. Get um unda fifteen words and keep um somewhere physical, cuz one notes app is where sentences go fo get forgotten.
What if da third ting stay jus one person?
Den you get one real answer, and one mo durable one den most causes. "What I doing for people I can name" stay one legit third ting, not one soft substitute for one, cuz it come wit one list, and one list you can check against one calendar.
It's also da answer wit da longest evidence trail behind um. Da Harvard Study of Adult Development wen follow da same group for almost eighty years, and da finding its director keep coming back to is dat da quality of one person's close relationships wen predict how healthy dey was at eighty betta den dea cholesterol did.
Here's da part dat separate dis from every give-back-later version of da same idea. Generosity normally get filed as what you do once da money and da status stay handled: da foundation, da board seat, da chapter at da end of da book. In real life it's often one of da tings dat wen get dem handled. Kaʻohele Carlos say um plain in his own words, as one account of his own twenty years and not one law about anybody else. Anodda secret to his success, he say, is giving back and doing volunteer work, always looking for chances fo coach, train, advise, lift up, commend and champion da people in his sphere, and da positive energy and support he wen get back was tenfold.
Notice what no stay inside dat sentence. No cause, no check, no gala. It's six ordinary behaviors, and every one of dem stay available dis week at any income.
- Say somebody's name inside one room dey not in.
- Commend one specific ting in public, in front of da people who matta to dem.
- Make da introduction you could have kept to yourself.
- Teach da ting you know.
- Volunteer da skill you get paid for, not only your hours.
- Champion somebody who neva ask and neva going find out.
Dat availability is da whole reason dis work on da way up instead of afterward.
If your third ting turn out to be people, write three names. Three stay enough fo be real and few enough fo still be true next year.
Da number is one tool, and now it get one job
Go get da next raise. Dat no stay da counterargument to any of dis, dat's da point of um. Somebody who know what da money stay for going ask for mo of um mo calm, hold one price longer, and walk away from one bad offer witout spending one month second-guessing da decision.
What change is da drive home. Da math on da next number keep running, and now it run toward someting you could say in one sentence to somebody who love you. Dat's da version of ambition dat still going be around in ten years. Da honest reason fo bodda no stay dat wanting less is mo wise. It's dat aimed wanting last longer, and lasting longer is how da big numbers show up in da first place.
