What Zero Sales Actually Stay Telling You

Zero sales stay information, not one verdict. Almost always stay one of four things: too few people wen see um, da wrong people wen see um, dey no could tell what um was in five seconds, or da price neva match, and you test um in dat order.

Three weeks ago you wen put um out. Da photographs stay good, da description tell what da thing stay, and people wen visit da page. What neva happen is one order, and da tab with da logo file inside stay open since Tuesday.

Put da logo down. Zero sales no stay one verdict on da work or on you, and it no stay one mystery too. It's one of one small number of ordinary, fixable situations, and get one order for check um dat stop you from changing four things at once and learning nothing from any of um. Twenty minutes of counting going tell you more than one whole weekend of redesigning. Dat's da good news buried inside one empty sales report. What you looking at stay data, and data stay exactly da thing you neva have last month when you was guessing.

Why nobody stay buying from my shop yet?

Almost always stay one of four things, and dey go in dis order: too few people wen see um, da wrong people wen see um, da right people no could tell what da thing was in five seconds, or dey understand um perfect and da price neva match what dey thought dey was getting. Test um in dat order, cause da first one make da other three impossible for measure.

  1. Volume. If forty people wen see da page, you get no information at all. Zero out of forty stay one completely normal result for something dat work.
  2. Audience. Plenty views, all from da wrong place. One post dat travel among people who going neva buy stay traffic, not demand.
  3. Comprehension. People arrive, no can tell what um is or who um for, and leave. Dis stay da most common real cause and da easiest one for fix.
  4. Price against value. Dey understand um, dey wanted um, and at dat number dey wen say no. Dis stay da last one for test and da first one everybody jump to.

Notice what no stay on da list. Your logo, your font, your colors, whether da name stay perfect. Those stay da things you can change at midnight without talking to one single human being, which stay exactly why dey get changed first and exactly why it rarely help.

How I tell one traffic problem from one product problem?

Count da views before you change anything. Under couple hundred visits, da honest answer stay dat you no more one product problem yet, you get one nobody-know-about-um problem, and da fix stay telling more people instead of rebuilding da thing.

Run da arithmetic with one ordinary number. If two visitors out of one hundred buy, den one hundred visits get you two orders and fifty visits get you one on one good week. Zero at fifty views no stay one signal. It stay da absence of one. Treating um like one signal stay how people end up redesigning one page dat was fine.

So write down two figures for last week: how many people wen see um, and how many wen do anything at all, which might be one order but might also be one message, one save or one follow. If views stay low, stop reading and go back to telling people direct. If views stay healthy and nothing stay happening, you get one real diagnostic in front of you and da next two sections stay yours.

How I run da five second test on my own page?

Show da page to one person who neva see um before, count five seconds, take um away, and ask dem what um was, who um for and roughly what um cost. Dea answer stay what your page actually say, no matter what you meant um for say.

Jakob Nielsen's research on how long people stay on web pages wen find dat da first ten seconds of one visit stay da critical ones, and dat da chance of leaving stay highest right at da beginning while people triage fast. One page dat neva make its case inside dat window stay usually gone. Five seconds no stay one artificially cruel test. It stay close to what your page really get.

You no need one crowd for dis. Da Nielsen Norman Group's long standing finding stay dat testing with five people surface around 85 percent of da usability problems in one design, while one single tester find roughly 31 percent. So dat's five friends, five separate five second looks, twenty minutes all together. Write down exactly what each person say instead of da gist. Where three of dem say da same wrong thing, dey wen rewrite your first line for you.

My logo stay da problem?

Almost never. Trust get built out of things dat stay far less fun for work on: clear pricing, real photographs, one visible way for reach one human, delivery and returns information, and evidence dat other people wen come here before.

Da Nielsen Norman Group's work on credibility in web design name da factors plain, and da ones dat move people stay design quality, telling dem up front about costs and terms, keeping content current and accurate, and staying connected to da rest of da web. One shop dat show shipping costs before checkout and list one real address read mo safe than one with one nicer wordmark and no way for ask one question.

Da price against value cause hide right here too. Baymard Institute's running average across fifty studies put documented online cart abandonment at 70.22 percent, and da reasons stay dominated by things people meet at da last moment, extra costs and unclear terms among dem. If people stay reaching your checkout and stopping, da problem often no stay da number on da product page. It stay one number dat wen show up later.

How many things I should change at once?

One every week. Change four and you learn nothing, cause whatever happen next you no going know which change wen cause um, and you going carry dat confusion into every decision after dat.

Pick da cause you testing from da four above, make one change aimed at dat cause, and set da date you going look again. One week stay usually enough for one small shop for see one difference in comprehension. One change to where your traffic come from need two. One price change need however long your normal buying cycle stay, which stay longer than you like um for be.

Write da change and da date in da same place. Den leave um alone. Da discipline of not touching um stay doing real work, cause dat's da whole difference between running one experiment and just stirring da pot.

Decide now what working look like at week six

Before you close dis page, write one sentence: at week six, dis stay working if one specific thing wen happen. Ten orders, or four, or twenty saved items, or three conversations with strangers. Pick da number now while nobody stay watching, cause da number you invent later, on one bad Sunday, stay always da one dat make you feel da worst.

Dat sentence stay what stop zero from being one verdict. It turn one feeling into one test with one date on um, and one test with one date stay something you can pass, fail, learn from and run again. Six weeks from now you either get your answer or one much sharper question, and both of those stay worth more than another logo.

Den go make more people see um. Almost every version of dis end with da same instruction, and da reason it feel too simple is cause um was neva one strategy problem. Somebody gotta be told, and you stay da person who know exactly who.
