Two companies like you. Dat stay da fact undaneath da spreadsheet you wen build three times already, and it took years fo arrange, and by Monday you going forget you was supposed to enjoy um.

One offer expire Friday. Da numbers stay close enough dat dey refuse fo settle um, and every time you rearrange da columns da answer move. Dat no mean you bad at deciding. It mean you comparing da wrong things, cause da easy things fo measure stay da things dat going matter da least in two years.

So change what you measuring. Compare da two offers on what compound: who you report to, what you going be able fo do next cause of dis, and how you going feel on one ordinary Tuesday. Here's how fo run dat comparison in one evening and den stop chewing on um.

How I choose between two job offers when both stay good?

Compare da things dat compound instead of da things dat stay easy fo add up. Da three dat compound stay da manager, da next door dis job open, and da texture of one normal Tuesday.

Write both futures out in full befo you answer either one. No make one pros and cons list, cause dat collapse everyting into one count. Make two short paragraphs in da present tense describing one Wednesday eighteen months from now. Who you working wit. What dey trust you wit. What you wen learn dat you neva know. What you tell somebody at one party when dey ask what you do.

Da one you can describe wit detail stay da one you know mo about, and dat stay real useful information, not some mystical hint. Detail come from asking good questions, meeting real people and understanding da actual work. If one paragraph stay vivid and da odda one stay one job description wit your name in um, you no get two offers yet. You get one offer and one advertisement, and da fix stay two mo conversations, not one mo evening wit da spreadsheet.

Den check what each one make possible. Some jobs stay ceilings wit good pay attached, and some stay doors. Ask of each one: what I going be qualified for in two years dat I no stay qualified for today.

Da manager really matter mo than da title?

Yeah, and it no stay close. Gallup estimate dat managers account for at least seventy percent of da variance in employee engagement across business units, so da person you report to shape how dis job actually feel way mo than da title on da offer.

Ask fo meet dem twice, and ask for da second meeting straight out. Dat stay one completely normal request at offer stage, and da answer to um stay information by itself. One hiring manager who make room stay telling you someting about how dey going treat your time in one year. One who no can find thirty minutes for somebody dey trying fo hire stay telling you someting too.

Ask questions dat stay hard fo answer wit one slogan. What wen happen to da last person in dis role. What somebody do here in dea first six months dat make you glad you wen hire dem. Tell me about one time you wen disagree wit your team and den change your mind. When was da last time you wen get somebody on dis team promoted, and what you wen do fo make um happen. Dat last one stay da sponsorship question in everyday clothes, and da answer separate one manager who talk to dea people from one manager who only talk for dem.

Talk to somebody who work dea and no stay on da hiring panel. One honest twenty minute call beat every page of da careers site.

How I weigh da money witout letting um decide?

Turn both offers into one annual number, den put dat number aside for da rest of da evening. Pay stay da loudest input today and da easiest one fo fix later. Dat stay exactly backwards from how it weigh on you tonight, which stay why da arithmetic go first and da deciding come after.

Do da arithmetic right first, cause one real gap and one imaginary gap no should feel da same. Add up da base, da realistic bonus instead of da maximum, da employer retirement contribution, da health coverage cost to you, and da commute in both money and hours. Equity in one private company no stay cash, and it belong on one separate line wit one question mark next to um. Two offers dat felt far apart often end up close once everyting sit on one line, and one small gap no stay worth one manager you had doubts about.

If da gap survive da arithmetic and it stay big, treat um as one real factor, not one vulgar one. Money stay why most people move. Pew Research wen find low pay was one of da two most cited reasons people quit one job in 2021, named by sixty three percent, tied wit da lack of chances fo advance. Wanting mo of um no stay one character flaw and dis library no going tell you otherwise.

And befo you accept either one, ask da compensation question one time, calm, in one sentence. Da worst outcome is da number stay da same.

I can ask for mo time befo I answer?

Yeah. Ask for forty eight mo hours, in writing, wit one specific reason and one specific new deadline, and almost everybody going say yes.

Da sentence stay short: I stay real interested and I like give you one clean answer instead of one rushed one, so can I come back to you by Thursday at noon. Nobody who wen spend six weeks hiring you like restart da whole process cause dey wen refuse you two days.

One exploding deadline dat no going move at all stay one data point about da company, not about you. Usually it mean somebody trying fo prevent you from getting information, and da information dey worried about stay rarely flattering.

Use da extra time for one conversation, not anodda spreadsheet. Anodda evening of arithmetic no going produce one new fact. One twenty minute call wit somebody who actually do da job going.

What if I pick da wrong one?

Den you correct um, which stay easier than it feel tonight, cause most job decisions stay two way doors. You can walk back out. It cost someting, but it no stay da one way door your nervous system telling you it is.

Dat framing come from Farnam Street's write up on reversible and irreversible decisions, and da practical rule stay simple: make reversible decisions fast and irreversible ones slow. One job you can leave in one year stay reversible. One move dat uproot one family, one non compete you wen sign witout reading, or one bridge you wen burn on da way out stay da parts dat stay genuinely hard fo undo, so dose stay da parts dat earn da slow careful hours. Sort your two offers into which parts stay which, and you going notice da truly irreversible list stay short.

Which stay also why da panic no paying for itself. Da point of getting steady tonight no stay dat calm make you nicer. One person who no panicking ask da second question in da manager meeting, notice da vague answer, negotiate witout flinching and sleep good enough fo stay sharp on Thursday. Dat stay composure doing work, not composure as one reward.

Write both Tuesdays out befo you answer either one

Tonight, take twenty minutes. Write da ordinary Tuesday in each job, eighteen months out, in da present tense. Den read dem back and notice which one you wen write wit detail and which one you wen write wit adjectives.

Den decide, tell both companies inside one day, and stop running da comparison. Da most expensive part of dis decision no stay making um wrong, it stay making um four mo times ova da next year, in da shower, in da car, at two in da morning. Write down da two or three reasons you wen choose da way you did and keep dem somewhere you can find. In six months, when da new job get one bad week, you going like read what you actually knew instead of what you can currently remember.

You get two companies competing for you. Choose da one dat make you mo dangerous in two years, den go be worth da offer.
