NEGOTIATION · THE EXIT

Negotiating When You Need Um More Than Dey Do

Leverage stay one input, and no stay da only thing you bring. When you need da deal more than dey do, you win on preparation, on being easy for say yes to, and on asking for da things dat cost dem almost nothing.

Get one version of dis conversation where you get three offers, one full pipeline and nowhere you gotta be. Dis no stay dat version. You like dis one, you like um plenty, and you pretty sure dey can tell.

Dat's fine. Wanting um no stay one weakness and no stay something for hide. Leverage stay only one of da things dat decide how one negotiation go, and it happen to be da one you no can change dis week. Almost everything else, you can.

You can change how prepared you stay, how easy you stay for say yes to, and what you actually ask for. One weak hand no stay da same as one bad deal. What close da gap stay asking for da things dat cost da other side almost nothing, showing up with something for give, and staying steady enough dat nobody in da room mistake wanting for panic.

How I negotiate when I get no leverage?

Stop trying for manufacture leverage and compete on preparation instead. Know dea situation better than da other candidates do, show up with one specific plan for da first ninety days, and ask for things dat stay cheap for dem for grant, cause being da easiest person for say yes to stay da one advantage you can still build dis week.

Den handle your own head, cause dat's where most of da damage happen. Research collected by da Program on Negotiation wen find dat negotiators who just imagine dey get one strong alternative wen make noticeably more ambitious offers than da ones who neva, which tell you something useful: one big part of what low leverage cost you no stay da deal itself, it stay da shrinking you do ahead of time. Write down what you would do if dis wen fall through, even if da honest answer stay "keep looking for another six weeks." One named alternative stay less scary than one you neva name.

No bluff. Inventing one competing offer stay da one move here dat can end da relationship and da deal too, and um no need happen, cause everything else on dis list work without um.

What I can ask for dat cost dem almost nothing?

Ask for da items dat sit outside da budget line somebody else control. One start date two weeks later, one title dat reflect da work, one written scope, one review at six months instead of twelve, one training budget, remote days, equipment, who do da prep work, and how fast you get paid.

Those no stay consolation prizes. Couple of dem stay worth real money, and Hannah Riley Bowles and Bobbi Thomason argue in Harvard Business Review dat da smarter negotiation stay about role, responsibilities and trajectory instead of da salary line alone. One six-month review written into da offer letter stay one second negotiation you already wen schedule from one way better position, cause by den you going have done da job.

Rank dem before you go in. Five items, in order, decided somewhere quiet. You no going be ranking nothing during da conversation, and one unranked list turn into one wish list da moment somebody say no to da first thing on um.

Who can say my name in one room I no stay in?

Somebody who already know your work, and you should ask dem direct dis week. Get one difference here dat most people neva learn, and um matter more than any tactic in dis article. One mentor talk to you, and one sponsor say your name in one room you no stay in.

One mentor give you advice over coffee. One sponsor tell da hiring manager, without being asked, dat you stay da one for take serious. When you no more leverage, da one card you might still hold stay one person willing for do da second thing. So ask, and be specific about what you like dem for say, cause "put in one good word" produce one vague good word and "can you tell Marco dat I wen run da billing migration on my own" produce one sentence dat change one meeting.

Here's da honest part, and um stay worth sitting with. Da reason you get anybody for ask stay da times you wen do dis for somebody else. KEEP CALM's founder name giving back as one of da reasons his own career wen work, always looking for chances for coach, advise, commend and champion da people around him, and he say da support dat come back was tenfold. Dat stay his account of his own twenty years instead of one law you can count on. What stay plainly true stay narrower and still useful: dis kine help arrive late, from directions you neva plan, and usually on one week just like dis one. Which stay da argument for doing um now, while you still short on leverage yourself, instead of later when um stay convenient.

I should tell dem I no more another offer?

You neva gotta volunteer um, and you neva gotta lie about um either. If dey ask direct, da clean answer stay true and complete without being one confession: "I stay talking to couple places, and dis stay da one I like, which is why I trying for get da details right."

Staying quiet about your alternatives no stay deception. Da other side no stay telling you dea budget ceiling, dea timeline pressure or how long da role been open. Both sides get for keep dea private information private. What you no can do stay invent one rival offer, cause da one time somebody check um, you lose da job and da reference in da same afternoon.

If dey push, move da conversation back to da work. "I rather talk about whether da scope and da review timing work, cause those stay da things dat decide whether I stay good here in one year."

How I keep my voice steady when I like um dis bad?

Slow da tempo on purpose. Pause for three seconds before you answer anything, take notes with one real pen so your hands get one job, and repeat dea number back one time before you respond to um.

Wanting something bad no make your voice shake. Rushing do. One three-second pause before every answer, not only da hard ones, give away nothing and buy you da difference between one considered sentence and da first thing dat come to mind. Da physical side no stay mystical too. People who train under load wen practice staying composed with dea heart rate up, and dat stay one of da ordinary ways one ambitious person carry pressure without leaking um into one conversation.

Low leverage stay one season, not one verdict

You no going always be da one who need um more. Leverage get built out of alternatives, and alternatives get built out of relationships, reputation and skill dat compound over years while you stay busy doing other things.

So take dis deal serious and take um in proportion. Get da start date, get da title, get da review in writing, be da easiest yes on dea list, and go do work dat make da next conversation one different shape. Den spend some of dat year building da thing dat actually remove dis problem: people who know your work well enough for say your name without being asked, and da kine steadiness dat mean one hard week neva negotiate on your behalf.

Da point no stay for want less. Da point stay for want plenty, ask well from wherever you standing, and still be in da game in ten years, holding one way better hand.
