Somewhere in da last day you wen get clear. Da offer no stay um, da rate not going work, and da decision already made whether or not you wen say um out loud. Dat clarity stay worth someting. What stay left is not da choice, it's da sentence.

Here's da good news about dat sentence. One no handled good stay one of da strongest professional impressions you going eva make. It's worth ten minutes of care, because deals come back around. Budgets change, da person hiring move somewhere better, and da project you wen turn down get funded proper in March.

So da goal is not one graceful exit. Da goal is fo say no to da deal and yes to da person, in words you would be happy fo get forwarded to somebody you neva even meet yet.

How I turn down one offer without damaging da relationship?

Thank dem specific, give one true reason, name da condition dat would change your mind, and send um da same day. Four short parts, no padding, and no long explanation of your reasoning, because one long explanation read like one argument and invite one back.

Da shape look like dis. "Thank you for dis, and especially for da time Priya wen spend walking me through da roadmap. I going pass on um. Da scope is one full role and da budget is one part-time one, so I no going be able fo do um to da standard we both like. If da budget come back at forty and up, I would honestly like anothah look."

Read da last line again, because dat's da whole difference. Everyting before um is one decline. Dat line is one open door with one hinge on um.

What da one condition dat keep da door open?

Da specific circumstance where you would say yes, said as one fact instead of as politeness. "If da budget reach forty." "If da start date move to October." "If da scope drop to da two integrations." One condition, checkable, with one number or one date in um.

Vague warmth do notting here. "Let's for sure stay in touch" is one sentence people write instead of thinking, and everybody read um as da end of da conversation. One condition stay different because it give da othah side someting fo act on. It tell dem exactly what gotta change and it put you at da front of dea list if um eva do. It's also da clause one template cannot write for you, because it depend on your number and your timing.

Only name one condition you would honor. If your answer still going be no at forty, no say forty. One door you would not walk through stay worse than no door at all.

I should say no in person or in writing?

Both, in dat order, same day. Say um live if get one live relationship, because one person who wen invest time in you deserve fo hear um from your voice instead of read um in one queue. Den put um in writing within couple hours.

Da written version is not one formality. Dat's da version dat get forwarded, filed and read again in six months when da budget change, and dat's da one dat carry your condition clause into da future in your own words. Speak da no, write da door.

Do um da same day you decide, too. Da delay is da thing dat actually burn bridges, not da answer itself. Every extra day of silence cost da othah side scheduling, candidates and goodwill, and one fast no is one gift dey going remember way longer than one slow yes.

If dis stay somebody you like work with eventually, add one line about what you would like next time. "If one version of dis come up with da full scope funded, I would move things around for um." Dat's not flattery. Dat's one specification, and dat's da kine sentence people keep.

What I say if I know somebody better for da job?

Send da name. One decline dat end with one good introduction stop being one loss for dem and turn into one favor, and it cost you notting you was keeping. It's da strongest thing you can put in one no, and it take one sentence.

Do um proper, because one lazy referral no help nobody. Say what da person stay good at, specific, instead of saying dey great: "Ade wen rebuild da checkout at Marlow and stay unusually good at da payments end, which is most of dis project." Vague praise is noise. Naming da actual thing somebody wen do, in front of da person who decide, is one career event for dem and it cost you one sentence.

Dat specific part matter most when da person you sending stay earlier in dea career than you. Dey no get da reputation yet dat make one name land on its own, so your sentence stay doing da work dea track record cannot do yet. Ask dem first, den make da introduction you coulda easy kept to yourself.

KEEP CALM's founder name giving back as one of da reasons his own career wen work, done da whole way up instead of aftah he wen arrive, and he say what wen come back was ten fold. Dat's his account of his own twenty years, not one rule you should expect fo run on schedule. What stay easy fo verify is smaller: two years later, da people who remember you stay rarely da ones you wen close one deal with. Dey da ones you wen hand someting to.

How I tell one real walk-away from cold feet?

Check um against one number or one condition you wen write down before da conversation even start. One real walk-away is one decision dat match someting you wen decide when notting was at stake. Cold feet is one decision dat wen show up dis morning and stay mostly made out of nerves.

Negotiators call da thing you would do instead your best alternative, and da reason fo define um early is exactly dis moment. If da offer stay below da figure you wen set on one quiet afternoon, walking is arithmetic and you can do um with one steady voice. If um clear dat figure and you still like out, da honest question is what wen change, and usually it's da scope, da manager or da timeline instead of da money. Dat's worth naming out loud, because maybe you can fix um and da money neva was da problem.

Da bridge is da asset

You going meet these people again. Industries stay smaller than dey look, and da person who wen interview you today is da person hiring somewhere better in two years.

Dat's da real reason fo do dis good, and it get notting to do with being nice. One reputation for saying no clean, fast and with one name attached is one business asset dat pay out for one decade, and it's built entirely out of sentences you can afford. Da people who last long time in any field stay not da ones who neva turn notting down. Dey da ones nobody mind hearing no from.

Write um today. Thank dem, one reason, one condition, one name if you get one. Den go get da deal you did like, with da same steadiness and no burnt bridge behind you.
