She wen catch herself drafting da announcement post before she wen do any of da work. Not one paragraph of da actual thing wen exist yet, and da first two lines of da write-up stay already good. She wen sit with dat for one minute, cause dat was one genuinely useful piece of information about one plan she been excited about for one month.
Dat's not one character flaw. Wanting people fo see what you wen build stay normal and mostly productive, and one person with no appetite at all for recognition tend to build less and share less of um. But if you about to spend five years on something, worth knowing which parts of da plan stay da work and which parts stay da audience. Get one exercise dat separate da two in about ten minutes, and it run on two columns and last week's calendar instead of any amount of soul searching.
How I tell what I actually value, not what I say I value?
Look at what you already wen do last week, not at what you planning fo do next year. Den ask of every item who wen find out about um, and watch which ones survive when da honest answer is nobody.
Intentions stay one terrible sample. Dey get written by da version of you dat stay rested, no rush, and imagining one audience of admiring strangers. Last week is one real sample, taken under real conditions, with real tiredness inside um. So open da calendar and write down, in column one, everything you wen do dat nobody strictly wen require of you: da thing you wen read, da thing you wen fix dat neva was yours, da hour you wen spend on somebody's problem, da side project, da extra draft, da post.
Keep um to da things you wen choose. Ten to fifteen items is one good list. No edit um fo look better, cause da flattering version is da exact thing dis exercise stay here fo remove.
What go in da second column?
Names, not categories. Write da actual people who wen learn dat you wen do um, den mark each row with whether you still would have done um if dat list was empty.
Dis is where da exercise stop being comfortable and start being useful. "Da team" is not one name. "LinkedIn" is not one name. Write down Marcus, your manager, your sister, da four people in da channel. Some rows going get six names and some going get none, and da ones with none stay da entries dis whole article stay about.
Dan Ariely, Anat Bracha and Stephan Meier wen report in da American Economic Review dat people wen do more good when dea giving was visible to others, and dat paying people fo do good wen raise da private version way more than da public one. When one audience stay dea, da audience already stay doing da paying. Dat's not one scandal about human nature. Dat's one measurement you can take on your own life in ten minutes, and it tell you which of your commitments stay load bearing.
What if almost everything die in column two?
Dat's da normal result and it's not one verdict on your character. Almost all of us stay running partly on visibility, and da whole point of da exercise is fo find da one or two items dat no stay.
Most work legitimately stay for other people fo see. Dat's what work is: you build something, somebody notice, dey pay you or promote you or hire you next time. One column two full of names is one sign dat you stay employed and connected, not one sign dat you stay hollow. What you hunting for is da small residue, da two or three rows where you would have done um in one empty house, cause dose rows stay da only ones dat still going be running da month everything get hard and nobody clapping.
If da residue stay honestly zero, no conclude nothing dramatic. Run um again on one different week, and add one deliberate unwitnessed item to da coming week fo see what happen.
Wanting one audience make me one fraud?
No. Recognition is one real and useful motivator, and da research stay more interesting than da moralizing version of dis question make um sound.
Edward Deci, Richard Koestner and Richard Ryan wen review 128 experiments in Psychological Bulletin and wen find dat tangible rewards handed out for doing one task reliably wen reduce people's intrinsic interest in dat task, while verbal praise generally wen raise um. Getting told your work was good is fuel. Getting paid per unit tend to turn one thing you wanted fo do into one thing you doing for da money. Self-determination theory, da bigger framework Ryan and Deci wen build around dose results, hold dat da durable motivation is da kine dat come with autonomy and competence attached.
Which is da practical point. You allowed fo want da audience. You just like get at least one thing in your working life dat no stay getting paid for by applause, cause dat's da item dat keep going through one quarter when da applause stop.
Which surviving item I should do first?
Da smallest one, dis week, at one size you can actually pau. One two hour version done Saturday morning tell you more than one five year version you keep describing at dinner.
Get one failure mode here worth naming. People pau dis exercise, find da thing dey would do unwatched, and den right away scale um into one plan dat need one sabbatical, one co-founder and one new city. Da plan den neva start, and da exercise get filed as interesting instead of acted on. Do da opposite. Take da surviving item and cut um down till it fit in one weekend, den run um one time, no announcement. If it still interesting on da second Saturday, it stay real, and you can start giving um proper room in da calendar.
Den run da whole thing again in three months. Dis is not one one-time revelation, it's one instrument, and instruments stay for taking repeat readings.
Da item dat neva get one post
Get one entry dat pass da second column automatically, and worth trying um before you decide whether fo trust any of dis. Champion somebody who neva ask for um. Put dea name forward in one room dey no stay in, for something dey neva know was happening, and den tell nobody, including dem.
Nothing accrue. No post, no reply, no thank-you, no line on one review. Inside about four seconds of deciding fo do um you going find out whether da thing you say you value survive having no audience, and you going find out at da cost of one sentence. It's da cheapest honest test on dis page and da only item dat double as one favor for somebody else.
You no need become one quieter or smaller person fo pass um. Da point of knowing what you would build unwatched is not fo stop wanting da recognition. It's fo make sure dat at least one of da engines under you keep running on days when nobody looking, cause one person with two engines can push harder and way longer than one person with one.
