Da offer wen come through on Tuesday. You wen earn um, you know exactly what um wen cost, and fo one or two days da messages come in and it feel as good as you was hoping. By Thursday da congratulations wen taper off, and you sitting on one big pile of goodwill with no clear idea what um stay fo.
Dat pile get one shelf life, and almost nobody tell you dat. Fo about two weeks after you get someting, your name carry mo weight in one room than um going carry again all year. People forward your emails mo fast. One recommendation from you get read instead of filed. One introduction from you get one answer.
Dat window stay da cheapest week of your whole career fo change somebody else year, and spending um no cost you nothing you can feel. Not cuz generosity stay virtuous, even though um is, but cuz one sentence from you stay worth mo, fo one short time, than da effort of saying um.
What I suppose to actually do da week after I get promoted?
Spend da attention on somebody else befo um fade. Make one introduction, say one person name specifically to da people who decide dea year, and write down what da win actually took while you still remember um.
Three moves, in dat order, and none of dem take one hour. Da usual advice fo this week stay rest, celebrate, and set da next goal. Rest and celebrate, fo sure. Da next goal stay week three problem, and picking um now while you still all lit up stay how people end up two years deep into someting dey wen choose in one mood.
Da third move stay fo you, not fo anybody else, and dat stay da one people skip. Write down da actual sequence: what you wen do, who wen help, what almost wen go wrong, what you would do again. In six months you going remember da outcome and almost none of da method, and da method stay da part you can give to somebody else.
What da difference between one mentor and one sponsor?
One mentor talk to you. One sponsor say your name in one room you no stay inside. Mentoring stay advice, given to you, usually in private; sponsorship stay advocacy, spent on you, in public, by somebody whose opinion carry weight.
Most people spend one whole career asking fo da cheap one, and no even know da other one exist. Catalyst stay direct about da consequence: mentoring stay vital fo development, but by itself it no stay enough fo advance women, and sponsorship stay da ting dat close dat gap. Herminia Ibarra, Nancy Carter and Christine Silva wen report da same pattern in Harvard Business Review, finding dat women wen get mentored mo than men and promoted less, and dat da missing ingredient was not advice but somebody with standing advocating fo dem inside da room where da decision wen get made.
Sponsoring somebody get four parts, and you can do um in one sentence. Da name. Da room, meaning people who can actually act. One specific claim, not one general compliment. And one ask: put her on da shortlist, give him da client meeting, read this befo Friday. "Priya suppose to be in da room fo da pricing review, she wen rebuild da model" stay one complete act of sponsorship, and um take eleven seconds.
How I going recommend somebody without putting my own name at risk?
Recommend da specific ting you actually wen see, and say plain what you neva see. "She wen rebuild our billing flow in six weeks and um neva broke since. I neva see her manage nobody" stay one recommendation people believe, exactly cuz da limits stay inside um.
Da two failure modes stay hedging and overreach. One hedged endorsement stay worthless to everybody: it cost you nothing, it do nothing fo dem, and da room can hear da hedge. One endorsement with no boundary make you one hostage to one performance you no can control, and one bad outcome teach you fo neva do um again, which stay da real long term cost.
Da bounded version fix both. You stating one fact you wen witness, in one area you can speak to, with da edges marked. If um go good, you was right. If um no go good, you was accurate about what you knew. Dat stay one reputation you can spend fo twenty years.
One piece of etiquette dat protect everybody: one introduction get two consents. Ask both people befo you connect dem, one line each, and take one no from either one without no commentary. Da favor stay da introduction, not da ambush.
What I going say when I praise somebody in public?
Name what dey wen do, in one sentence, in front of da person whose opinion of dem matter da most. Vague praise stay noise; one specific fact stated in front of one decision maker stay one career event fo dem, and um cost you one sentence.
Da shape stay simple. What wen happen, what dey specifically wen do, what um was worth. "In da Tuesday review, Daniel wen catch da pricing error dat would have cost us da quarter. I would neva have found um." No adjectives about dea character, no "great job", no "such one team player". Adjectives stay about your opinion of dem. Facts stay about dem.
Get one reason fo believe this do mo than just feel nice. Adam Grant and Francesca Gino wen run four experiments on gratitude expressions and wen find dat one short thank you make people way mo willing fo help again, and dat da mechanism was feeling socially valued, not feeling mo capable. Those experiments neva compare public praise with private praise, so take da next step as reasoning and not as one finding: if da ting doing da work stay being valued by other people, den saying um in front of da people whose opinion of dem matter stay da version dat carry furthest, and stay da version dat reach da room where dea next opportunity get decided.
KEEP CALM founder put giving back right alongside hard work and composure instead of after dem, and dat stay da unusual part. In his own words he was always looking fo chances fo coach, train, advise, lift up, commend and champion da people in his sphere, da whole way up instead of only once he wen arrive, and he say da positive energy and support dat wen come back was ten times what he wen put in. Dat stay his description of his own twenty years, not one rate of return you suppose to expect or plan around.
How come I feel flat after I get da ting I wanted?
Cuz da goal was doing real work in your week, and nothing wen replace um yet. Da flat feeling stay one goal shaped hole in da calendar, not evidence dat you wen like da wrong ting, and um fill up mo fast when da next ting you do point at one person instead of at one new number.
Dat stay da practical case fo spending this week outward. Attention dat get nowhere fo go turn inward and start auditing, and one audit run in da first flat week after one win reach unreliable conclusions. Sponsoring somebody move your focus outside your own nervous system at da exact moment self focus stay da most expensive, and um produce feedback within days.
Den pick da next ting slow. Two weeks of spending da win, den choose. One target picked in da quiet stay one target you still like in month nine.
Championing somebody who going neva know you wen do um
Get two mo behaviors on this list, and dey stay da ones dat make da rest believable. Teach what you know, in public if you can, cuz explaining someting out loud stay also da fastest road to owning um, and da parts you no can explain stay da parts you was faking. Volunteer da skill dey pay you fo, not only your hours, cuz one hour of da ting you expert at stay worth one whole day of general help.
Den da last one, which stay da closing move: champion somebody who neva ask, who going neva find out you wen do um, and who no can pay you back. Dat stay da only version with no possible return, which stay exactly why um worth naming. If you going do dat one, den da other five was neva transactions either.
So go get da next ting, and go at um hard. Just spend this one first, this week, while your name stay briefly worth mo than um ever been.
